Tonight's episode was the season finale, notice I didn't say Series finale, quite the contrary it was the start of something more. Now, you may call me optimistic, but with the way the episode ended, this could prove more true, but more on that. For now, we will talk about what unfolded and what else we know about where this revival is headed. Of course, we realized that they would pick up from where the main Myth Arc left off.
Near the beginning of the beginning of the episode, after Scully’s snapshot recap of what has happened up until the present, we see Tad O’Malley is back and so is his show and he explains the dark forces that cut the plug and why they did so. They, he claims, were afraid of the truth and what it could mean for those behind the biggest conspiracy the world has ever known. He is on his show as usual although he appears to be sick and feverish and announces that the entire populace of the US has Alien DNA. He discusses this with Dr. Oscar Griffiths.
Now, let’s switch over to Scull and Einstein who are at a familiar scene, the hospital where Scully started working once her days with the FBI had come to a close. She and Einstein have interesting banter in regards to what is happening to armed forces personnel who suddenly start showing symptoms of having been infected by Anthrax. She tells Einstein that this was done to the soldiers who were willingly taking the vaccine to protect them. When in reality it was designed to kill them and how their DNA, all US Citizens’ DNA had been replaced with Alien DNA, but for what purpose, Scully admits she doesn’t know. OF course, being the lovable skeptic that Einstein is, she refutes this with her own knowledge of science a’la Scully from the onset of the X-Files and Mulder. Then as time wears on during their time together at the Christian Hospital, she begins to come around and although Scully’s first attempt to find Alien DNA embedded in her own human DNA, she persists and it was Einstein who recommends that they need a bigger sample and voila, Alien DNA is in fact in Scully. Scully, thus, decides it wasn’t that we all possessed Alien DNA, but on the contrary it was her very DNA that could be used to cure everyone. Einstein becomes sick and feverish and concedes to the Spartan Virus, what they are calling this contagion. Scully worries that within a short span of time, this contagion could spread globally. But during their conversation, Scully receives a call from a mystery woman who tells her to meet with her that she has something to tell her that could save her and Mulder. Scully presses her for her name and once they meet up, the mystery is cleared up like cloud cover at noon. It turns out that former Agent Reyes has had a change of heart in regards to her duty to the FBI and reluctantly she resigns.
Of course, who could be so diabolical and methodical and evil enough to get such a dedicated Agent to quit and join him in his evil re imagining of the world? None other than the Cancer man, yes, he survived albeit in a very poor state, over 80% of his body is covered with fourth degree burns. Although to all appearances he should die before long, but he is confident that he’ll make a full recovery. He goes on to boast about his survival and how it happened. This man, who orchestrated all of this, survives thanks to Alien DNA in his system and he claims to be able to use it to save Mulder and Scully. He makes her the offer and against her better judgment she concedes to him and together they begin his evil work.
The Cancer Man appears to be healing right before our eyes, although he’s got a ways to go before he’s whole again. He still has to breathe through a hole in his throat and makes her insert the cigarette in said hole so he can get his cancer stick fix. This doesn’t bother him even when she (Reyes) tells him that he’s going to die a lonely old man, which makes him laugh for he knows that she is ignorant to what he can do. He tells her again that he is the most powerful man and you can see the look of despite and hatred in her eyes. Still she has to do his bidding for the time being, until she can be certain that the Cancer Man keeps his word and saves her friends.
A bit later, we see Mulder again, and he has reached CW’s (Cancer Man), house and branding his firearm he circles around to face CW, and declares, “You put all of this into motion, it’s time for you to put it to an end,” to which CW responds that it is beyond prevention. Then Mulder begins to feel the effects of the Spartan Virus, and collapses to the floor, ever resilient and adamant resolve to fight to his dying breath for his cause to save everyone, he fights against the sickness, and continues his banter with the Cancer Man. CW, the Smoking Man aka the Cancer man, offers him a choice to accept his help, and get the cure that only the chosen are allowed to have. So, that they may survive the end of the world while the rest of humanity dies and fades away.
Scully, while trying to use her Alien DNA to start a treatment for Einstein and the other sick, receives a call from Agent Miller who rescued Mulder from the clutches of the vile Cancer man, and she grabs up a few IVs and rushes out of the hospital and after quelling an angry mob, she hops into her SUV and dodges and weaves through throngs of pedestrians and a few confused and scared motorists, and she reaches the bridge, she asks Miller for their location, and the latter notices her and tells her to keep coming toward them and Scully obeys and works her way to them.
By this time, Mulder’s condition has deteriorated and he is getting closer and closer to death. TO put it mildly, he is knocking on Death’s Door. And before she can start administering the cure in the IV bags, something stays her hand and catches all’s attention and before she knows it, an ARV (Alien Replicated Vehicle) appears before the stunned and scared people on the bridge and its bright blue light comes on and a sudden change begins to happen in Scully, noticeable in her eyes, they begin to contract and she just states blankly up at the alien craft.
Miller and Scully look on as the ship hovers above them its light shining down upon them. It is ironic that this happens right after Scully tells Miller about their son (Mulder and Scully), William, and how he has immunity to this virus like she does.
