Despite The Walking Dead being full of couples, it has shown surprisingly few steamy scenes over its six seasons — which is why that scene on Sunday night was so powerful (not to mention unexpected). And, while we got a pretty good look at the bare backs of both Rick and Michonne, it turns out it was only really thanks to Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira's campaigning for more nudity!
In an interview with TV Line, Andrew Lincoln revealed that the original script for the episode called for Michonne to cover herself up before she jumps out of bed, but as Lincoln explained, neither he nor Gurira thought that was very authentic:
"Danai said, 'No, she wouldn’t. She’d go for her sword.' And I said, 'Yeah. And Rick would go for his gun. And we’d both be naked.' So we campaigned for the butt-crack shot [at the end]. That wasn’t in the script. We both said, ‘If we’re going to do it, let’s do it.'
Hey, they've definitely got a good point, and I know that the audience isn't complaining either!
It just goes to show that these actors really know their characters and are willing to pull out all the stops (and take off all their clothes...) to make their scenes as authentic as possible.
Even though it's shown on a cable network, The Walking Dead still has to work with some pretty rigid conditions regarding the use of nudity, swearing, and extreme violence (though the series has managed to show some pretty intense gore already). Despite that, it still manages to slip in the occasional salacious scene, check out a few audiences have been privy to over the course of the series:
Season 2, episode 4
After a near death experience involving a walker in a well, Glenn and Maggie went on a supply run and ended up getting down and dirty in a pharmacy.
Season 3, episode 13
After fighting for some time, Glenn and Maggie abandoned their guard post and made up in spectacular fashion.
Season 5, episode 5
Rosita and Abraham got it on back in Season 5, and pervy Eugene couldn't resist taking a sneaky look.
Season 5, episode 12
After not having access to running water for an age, Rick took the time to appreciate the hot water in Alexandria (and the audience took the time to appreciate Rick).
'The Walking Dead' returns with episode 11 'Knots Untie' on Sunday, February 28th on AMC.
