Let's start by stating the obvious that introducing certain Marvel characters must wait until after Spidey's first solo outing and only if the movie is extremely successful so Sony can wash the bad taste from The Amazing Spider-man 2 out of their mouths. I also wonder since Marvel and Sony are partners regarding the web-crawler, can Sony develop other spider-related properties in the same realm as Marvel's MCU, or do they need to be separate universes (that doesn't make sense, but you never know)?
The main purpose of this article is to figure out if there's a way to introduce certain fan-favorite characters in the immensely popular Marvel's shared-universe in an organic manner. Spider-Man is the most popular superhero in the world with merchandising surpassing over a billion dollars annually. Some could argue that introducing too many characters with similar powers of Parker's would dilute the brand, but with the diversity that each new character brings it would only strengthen the brand by reaching different fan bases.
Could We See These Characters on the Big Screen?
I would add Miles Morales, Gwen Stacey, and Jessica Drew into the growing roster of heroes at Marvel. I know I am certainly getting ahead of myself especially since Spider-Man is set to make his debut in [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409). When something as massive as the MCU, planning ahead for future installments is a necessity to ensure quality. Adding these new characters into possible movies, or television series creates a compelling visual dynamic because their powers are unlike anything we've seen on either screen previously.
You could also substitute these other wall-crawlers in place of Parker, if Marvel were adapting a story that originally had Spider-Man and he was unavailable at the time of filming. I am still unsure of the details of the contract between the studios and I am sure we will find out more before the release of Captain America: Civil War.
Who Should Play These Characters and How They Should Be Introduced
In the new Spider-Man movie Peter Parker supposedly won't even be able to drive yet and that will put a damper on a lot of people's fan cast. Gwen Stacy was bitten by the same spider as Peter, but in a different universe. If we want to see each of them sharing the screen together then Ms. Stacy must roughly be the same age as Parker.
After the initial Spider-Man movie you could easily say that Gwen was bitten also that same day Peter got his powers. She was very nervous and did not want to draw attention to herself, until the day her father died. This is when she decided to take the mantle of Spider-Gwen (They better pick a different name since her first name is in the title!) and decided to fight injustice while modeling her suit after Peter's. I would love to see the Brooklyn actress Saoirse Ronan play this superhero and she certainly has the acting ability with her Academy Award nomination!
Jessica Drew could possibly be introduced in Spidey's first solo outing as a Blogger trying to get the scoop from Spider-Man. There are many different options that Marvel/Sony could go with from the source material for her origin. Spider-Woman is as strong and independent as any superhero from any comic publication. My favorite incarnation of Spider-Woman is from the Ultimate line where she confronts Miles about dressing like the recently deceased Spider-Man and she scares him so bad that he knocks himself out accidently. Depending on how large of role she'll receive, I would love to see Alicia Vikander play the role of Spider-Woman! (Yes, I am dreaming!)
With Miles recently in Marvel's main universe and it's almost a no-brainer that he will appear in the movies. Marvel could give him practically the same origin in his original comic (without Peter dying) and he waits to be Spider-Man until Spidey is injured because of him and he does nothing. This guilt will fester and he decides to put on the iconic black and red suit to fight crime. I would rather see him acquiring his powers and fighting crime without any guilt, or remorse because he is a true hero. I could see Marcus Scribner (Blackish) portraying the remarkable Miles Morales at the young age of 16 and this is plenty of age gap between Miles and Peter. (Hudson Yang from ABC's Fresh of the Boat could play Mile's best friend Ganke!)
I will be paying close attention in the upcoming months prior to Captain America: Civil War for any pertinent details on the deal between Marvel/Sony over this unprecedented merger. I am very interested to see if Sony will be able to create any television programs, or able to produce movies using Marvel characters that they do not currently own. Lastly, I truly hope that somehow the characters I've previously mention somehow make it to the silver screen and if so then we as fan are in for a treat!
