Now, while the rampant box office success of the very much R-rated Deadpool has clearly been a major victory for Fox, it also looks set to open up a brave new world of possibilities for R-rated superhero movies across the industry. After all, Wade Wilson might be everyone's favorite R-rated antihero with a fondness for ultra-violence right now, but that doesn't mean he isn't going to have some competition. Remind yourself of the trailer:

The latest potential beneficiary of Deadpool's blood-soaked trail-blazing? Why, it's only the cinematic adaptation of Joe Casey's acclaimed comic book Officer Downe. In fact, according to its producer Mark Neveldine:

'Officer Downe' Might Just Be "Better Than Any Marvel Movie Or DC Movie Ever Made."

Yup, that's right. Neveldine — who you might remember as the co-director of Crank — recently told the The Movie Crypt podcast that he expected Officer Downe to be more than a match for any Marvel or DC movie we've yet seen.

Which — intriguing as the prospect of a movie about a cop who, having been killed in the line of duty, is repeatedly resurrected and sent back out to face a horde of costumed foes is — may well prove to be blind optimism on Neveldine's part. After all, to be proven right, the movie — directed by Slipknot co-founder Shawn Crahan — is going to have to be better than Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, Joss Whedon's The Avengers AND Mark Neveldine's own Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance.

No, wait, how did that last one get in there?

Whether Officer Downe is able to live up to its superheroic predecessors, though, fans of ultra-violence and '70s/'80s-style authority figures with a vendetta will surely be in for a treat when the movie arrives on our screens later this year.

What do you think, though?
