At the end of episode 10 'The Next World,' The Walking Dead went somewhere totally unexpected to many when Rick and Michonne shared their first onscreen kiss (and the rest...). But while some fans were totally gobsmacked that the pair got together, there were a few that had seen the warning signs for months, or even years.
Reddit user fifthchevron recently posted an extremely detailed post on The Walking Dead subreddit explaining all the subtle foreshadowing and relationship development between Rick and Michonne, showing that their romantic relationship is definitely not as out-of-left-field as some think. Take a look at the evidence that fifthchevron has compiled, and see if you agree:
In episode 6 'Hounded,' two episodes after the death of Lori, Rick is just beginning the grieving process, and along comes Michonne, complete with a basket of baby formula. Michonne's whole reason for finding the prison was to find Judith, which immediately bonded her to the Grimes family, introducing her into Rick's life as Lori exited it.
In episode 10 'Home' Michonne and Rick have another personal moment when Michonne appears to be the only character who sees Rick chasing Lori's ghost outside the prison gates. She later confides to him that she used to talk to her dead boyfriend too.
In episode 12 'Clear,' Rick takes Carl and Michonne with him on a supply run. Michonne bonds with Carl when she saves him from walkers, helps him recover a family photo, and also retrieves a present for baby Judith. Later Carl tells his father "she might be one of us."
In episode 1 '30 Days Without an Accident' Michonne finds a razor on an unsuccessful hunt for the Governor and gives it to Rick (she also brings comic books for Carl). Meanwhile Rick also asks if she plans to stay at the prisoner longer, considering she frequently leaves for long stretches to search for the Governor, showing a definite fondness for her.
In episode 8 'Too Far Gone' Michonne saves Rick from the Governor, as fifthchevron points out "Constantly having Rick and/or Michonne be the ones to do significant things for one another isn't accidental."
In episode 9 'After,' Rick, Michonne and Carl are reunited after the prison was destroyed. After finding the boys Michonne cries with relief and joy, and upon seeing her at the door Rick smiles and tells Carl the door is for him.
In episode 11 'Claimed' Rick, Michonne and Carl bond on another supply run, sharing responsibilities. Michonne also reveals to Carl that she had a son named Andre, who was killed. This close bonding also lasts into episode 12 'Still.'
In episode 16 'A' following the incident with the Claimers in which Carl and Michonne are nearly raped, Michonne comforts Carl. She tells Carl that she credits him, his dad and Andrea from bringing him back from the brink, and helping her process her grief. When Rick asks Michonne is she's ok following the incident, she replies that she's ok because he's ok.
In episode 9 'What Happened and What's Going On' Michonne expresses her wish to settle down somewhere, fortify it and quit wandering around. Rick comes around to the idea and agrees to make the 100 mile journey to Washington D.C.
In episode 11 'The Distance' the group finally make it to Alexandria, and though no words were spoken, Michonne and Rick share a close moment together before they step out of the car and see their new home.
In episode 12 'Remember' Michonne remarks on a clean shaven Rick, and the two also start living in the same house. They're also paired up to work together as constables.
In episode 15 'Try' Michonne does Rick a solid by knocking him out cold after he loses his shit in front of the entire town.
In episode 16 'Conquer' the two talk about how Michonne is still very much on Rick's side despite knocking him out one episode earlier. She returns his gun and there are some quite obvious feelings going on between the pair.
In episode 3 'Thank You' there was a parallel moment when David talks about how meeting his wife Betsy "brought him out" of his grief – much like Rick did with her (as well as Carl and Andrea).
In episode 9 'No Way Out' there were a number of moments which showed that Michonne would do anything for Rick and his family – firstly she skewered Ron to stop him shooting Rick, then she ran ahead cutting down walkers to clear the way for Rick and Carl. At the infirmary she tenderly removed Rick's walker-guts poncho as he sat inconsolable about Carl's injury, and finally she held Carl's head still as Denise stitched it, waiting until she had done all she could for him before going out and assisting Rick with walker killing.
In episode 10 'The Next World' the audience sees Rick without his wedding ring for the first time. Michonne recalls Deanna asking her what she wants, and when Deanna's son, Spencer asks her if she's figured it out yet she replies that she's working up to it. Later on Rick brings her a roll of mints and the rest, as they say, is history.
'The Walking Dead' returns with Episode 11, 'Knots Untie' on Sunday, February 28 on AMC.
