It's fairly easy to find praise for Mario Kart 8. Take a glance at the game on Metacritic and you're likely to run into statements like "The best Mario Kart ever," "Mario Kart 8 embodies what Nintendo does so well. They take something that works and they eventually make it smooth and great and absolutely irresistible," and "Time after time, they come back with exceptional racing games and Mario Kart 8 might be the best we’ve ever seen."
We'd have to agree, as the Berlin office at Moviepilot has been addicted to Mario Kart 8 since it was released in 2014. It's still played here, every day. So how can Nintendo improve upon Mario Kart perfection?
How Can Nintendo Improve On Mario Kart 8?
What is it about Mario Kart 8 that we love? Let's take a look at some of the aspects that fans have showered with praise:
- You can finally block the flying blue shell. Praise be.
- Graphics on the Wii U are stunning.
- Online is an absolute seamless blast.
- Fantastic course design.
- Remarkable value for money.
- DLC packs have been worth every cent and have included great characters and courses.
- Local multiplayer is still as impressive as ever.
- Large variety of vehicle types, characters and customization options.
- Free updates, including the introduction of 200cc.
Nintendo are masters at refining a product. They've been making Mario games for decades and somehow they still feel relevant, innovative and at their core, so much fun. The game is so perfect that I literally cannot conceive a way in which it could be improved upon. I'd genuinely be happy if Nintendo just gradually released more and more DLC packs for the game that introduced new characters, new races and new vehicle customization options. What would be wrong with that?!
Mario Kart 9 Or Just More DLC?
Nintendo will obviously plan further Mario Kart installments in the future. After all, the company is planning to release a new console, the NX! But what new ideas can further refine Mario Kart 8's accomplishments? The driving is sublime, the graphics are great, all we need is more content.
If there's any direction that Nintendo are going to go with Mario Kart, it's the direction of Super Smash Bros. Have you seen the amount of Nintendo and other characters that have entered [Super Smash Bros. Wii U](tag:3766492)? What if the links of Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Metroid and so many other franchises could get their own vehicles and themed race tracks in Mario Kart 9?
Seeing as Mario Kart 8 has introduced a lot of joy in the office at Moviepilot, we'd be perfectly content with further DLC packs that could gradually introduce more and more characters and further race tracks. But with the NX on the horizon, Mario Kart 9 seems likely. But what would you want to see changed in the next installment? Let us know where you stand in the comments below!
