Paramount has set a brand new release date for Vin Diesel's return to the xXx franchise; xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage. The film will release January 20th 2017.
The film is currently shooting in Toronto and is directed by D.J Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye).
The third film in the xXx franchise follows Vin Diesel’s character as he comes out of self-imposed exile to recover a sinister and seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box.
The film stars Vin Diesel (Furious 7), Nina Dobrev (The Perks Of Being A Wallflower) and Samuel L. Jackson (The Hateful Eight).
Personally I couldn't be less excited for xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage. I like Vin Diesel, he has a great presence on social media and is quite good in his films, even in the pretty mediocre The Last Witch Hunter from 2015 but I have such little interest in the xXx franchise. The first one was forgettable and I never even saw the sequel starring Ice Cube and a January release date for this third film is not a good sign.
January is what is known as the dumping ground for films, you'll find some of the years worst releases often open in January, but for example, 2016 had some decent films such as 13 Hours and Kung Fu Panda 3 open in that month. I do think a release at the beginning of the year is a smart move for Paramount, in a year with so many action blockbusters, a film like xXx would be murdered at the Summer box office, so a January placement makes complete sense, it's just hard not to get worried about it.
