The final episode of Gravity Falls was very revelatory, with plenty of mysteries solved and foreshadowed events finally coming to pass. The final battle with Bill Cipher was epic and the pop-culture references were strong as the Pines transformed the Mystery Shack into a mecha to battle Bill and his monstrous friends.

But ultimately, the most groundbreaking part of Weirdmageddon III was actually very subtle, and the revelation was a long time coming.

Officers In Love

Gravity Falls' hapless yet lovable cops are one of the staples of the show.

They're not the most effective of law enforcers, but their clear affection for one another and adorable relationship makes them a joy to watch whenever they're on screen:

"If being delightful was a crime, you'd be breaking the law!"

Fans have suspected that the relationship between Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland went beyond friendship and into more romantic territory. This isn't too much of a stretch, considering how close the two characters are, as evidenced by this supercut of all their scenes together:

However, including LGBT characters in children's television is fraught with difficulties, so fans gave up hope of confirmation that these two characters were romantically linked. Until the finale aired.

A Dramatic Reunion

There were many awesome moments during the Gravity Falls finale, and among the epic battles and supernatural shenanigans a touching reunion between these characters occurred.

"Don't you ever scare me like that again."
"Don't you ever scare me like that again."

Sheriff Blubs literally swept the Deputy into his arms, and for a moment it seemed the two characters were going to kiss. Instead, they hugged and the townsfolk burst into applause.

But the true revelation came later on, when the characters made their affection for each other obvious:

While this isn't as clear as actually saying "I love you," it's probably as far as Alex Hirsch was allowed to go when confirming this relationship.

Struggles With Censorship

Kids cartoons have fought with censors before: Adventure Time had the Marceline/Bubblegum scandal, Legend Of Korra finally managed to make Korra and Asami canon (subtly), and even Steven Universe was recently censored in the UK.

When asked in a Reddit AMA if Gravity Falls would ever feature a gay couple, Alex Hirsch admitted that while he wanted to include LGBT relationships, he was concerned he wouldn't be allowed:

"I would LOVE to but I doubt they'd ever let me do it in kids TV. But man I would if I could."

And we saw proof of this struggle before: In the episode Love God, a lesbian couple was storyboarded and yet was changed to a heterosexual couple for the final version of the episode.

In the version that aired the couple was interracial, and with the woman lifting the man up it was also defying heterosexual stereotypes, so y'know, it was still pretty great.

It seems as though in the final episode of the show Hirsch was able to sneak this one pass the censors and, when confirming gay couples in cartoons, subtlety does seem to be the key. Politics aside, it's good to know that Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland are happily together, and finally free from the hellish Weirdmageddon.
