As Star Wars: The Force Awakens is finally starting to slow down at the box office, it's time to start promotion of the next film in the Star Wars Universe, Star Wars: Rogue One. The film will be the first film that is set outside the world of Episodes 1-7, and the start of an anthology series planned by Disney. The premise of the film reads as follows:
“It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have magic powers… that have to bring hope to the galaxy.”
We are 10 months away from the release of the film, and anticipation for the first trailer could not be higher. So what should we expect to see from Rogue One?
Overall Tone Of The Film
The films in the anthology series are meant to focus on the more "normal" characters in the universe, with this film rumored to be Jedi-free. This will mark the first time a Star Wars film is not focused on a Skywalker, so the tone of the film will be completely different from the main episodes.
When asked about the differences from the original trilogy, Director Gareth Edwards had this to say:
“The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent.” Instead of characters relying on the power of an unpredictable Force to save them, the film will center around “real,” grounded human issues. “It’s about the fact that God’s not coming to save us… we have to do this ourselves. It comes down to a group of individuals that don’t have magic powers… that have to bring hope to the galaxy.” (Source - Variety)
According to Cinelinx Editor and Chief Jordan Maison, multiple trailers are being shown to Disney execs to nail down just which tone they want to establish.
Will he, or won't he: that is the question. The appearance of the universe's most notorious villain is still in question. Will he be the main antagonist or will he be a shadow-like figure, pulling the strings of someone else - Boba Fett perhaps? Rumors mostly suggest the latter; Devin Faraci over at Birth.Movie.Death let go of some unconfirmed information he received recently:
Darth Vader will be in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. He will not be the main antagonist but he will be working behind the scenes, pulling strings and will appear onscreen. Literally, I’m told – he’ll be showing up via viewscreen or holo projection or something. Will our heroes actually run into the Dark Lord of the Sith in person? My source wouldn’t say. My source was also mum about Grand Moff Tarkin, who was of course the commander of the fully operational Death Star.
You better believe if he really is in the film, the studio will be letting audiences know with an appearance in the first trailer. Just the sound of his iconic breathing will be enough to send fans into a frenzy.
While the movie sports an all-star cast which includes Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker, and Mads Mikkelsen to name a few, we still don't have any idea who they'll be playing. This has to be a strategic move to promote the movie and their identities will surely be revealed in the first trailer. My only guess is that some of the rumors are true and that some characters will have ties to existing ones in the universe.
One rumor I particularly would like to see hold true is the one that the character of Felicity Jones will actually be the daughter of deadly bounty hunter Boba Fett. With a Boba Fett standalone project supposedly in the works, this could be a great opportunity to give audiences an idea of the feel of the upcoming film.
The Star Wars: Rogue One trailer is rumored to be attached to another Disney property: Captain America: Civil War, out in May. It is possible that the studio will want to get a jump-start on the marketing and attach it to Batman v Superman in just four weeks. I for one can not wait to see what the film has in store.
