Jon Bernthal is breaking out into the role of Marvel's famous vigilante, Frank Castle a.k.a The Punisher, on March 18th in the much anticipated season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil.
However, even before his big debut, it seems that this character is already popular enough for the fans to want a solo series. It's been up in the air for months whether or not a Punisher series should be green lit or not but in a recent interview, Jon Bernthal decided to give his opinion on the recent rumors. In his words:
This guy is very much burned into my heart and soul. I think about him all the time. And I look at it the same way Frank would look at it. I’m a soldier, man. If they call on me, I’ll stand to attention and I’ll be ready.
During an interview about how Frank Castle is going to fit into the storyline of Daredevil, Jon Bernthal reveals that he has become very connected to this character and that he would be 100% behind a Punisher solo series.
While this could be an exciting piece of news, Executive Vice President Jeph Loeb has recently deflated these rumors saying that it's nothing but speculation. In his words:
I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening,” Loeb told Digital Spy. “It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them
However, Loeb has also stated that the renewal of Netflix's Jessica Jones was a surprise to him and that a Punisher series might still be possible sometime in the future:
When they announced that Jessica Jones was getting a second season, every single report said, ‘It should come as a surprise to no one that Jessica Jones has received a second season order.’ I’m the guy going, ‘Well, it was a surprise to me!’ It isn’t a given in television. The fact that we get to continue telling stories with these characters speaks a lot about the quality of the storytelling and the acting and the writing. We are telling the best stories that we can at Netflix, and they seem to be responding to it.
So it would seem that the rumors of a spin-off series are not completely dead, it will still be a while before we see any sign of a solo Punisher series because Marvel is still developing many other future Netflix projects such as the upcoming Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Defenders series. Regardless of this though, the Punisher debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still very exciting and you should set the date on your calendar for the premier of all 13 episodes of the second season of Daredevil.
