In 2016 we are getting a lot of new and different superhero movies...
This was the first of the superhero movie of 2016. This was the first R-rated superhero movie in a while. It was new and different and worked really well within the R-rating. It opened up a new era for R-rated superhero movies.
Batman vs Superman / Captain America: Civil War
These movies are the first of their kind in the respect that they are the first superhero movies, I believe to have two heroes or groups of heroes facing of against each other, although there are still villains in these films e.g. Lex, Doomsday, Crossbones and Baron Zemo, the main opposition and source of conflict is the heroes. I'm personally looking forward to both of these movies.
Suicide Squad is the most different and extraordinary of the 2016 superhero movies. These are villains that are doing good for shortened sentences. This could be interesting as the villain dynamic and relationships could affect the mission.
This adds the new complex of magic to superheroes. The closest film/show magic-related was probably Constantine. I honestly don't know what to expect from this. Magic can work well but sometimes there is the problem of limitations on magic. This may not be liked by viewers however let's wait and see.
Finally onto the main discussion
In the past months we have been hearing about how there are worries concerning batman vs superman. This is probably the movie I am looking forward to the most as for me it is effectively the birth of a new potential universe. This movie sets the tone of the dc universe but also to some extent it's success.
My greatest personal fear for this movie is coming out of the cinema after spending about £15 on my 3d IMAX ticket and saying it was alright. I personally want to come out of the cinema and talk about how awesome this was or how great this was. I want to rush home and write a review about how great this movie was and how much I recommend it.
I think my uncle said it best when I asked him:
If it is good it can really be a success, but if it flops then the DC universe is dead and maybe the best we might experience of it is Arrow, The Flash and the rest of DC's TV shows.
This may sound overdramatic but I would say to some extent it is true in that it would leave a bad taste in fans mouth and fans are often not very forgiving. So therefore would need quite a few movies to actually change people's opinion of the dc universe.
Now onto Suicide Squad.
We know a bit about this movie such as the roster but the real question is can it save the dc universe.
Why it could: As said above it is the first of it's kind. It could be similar to deadpool in that it may not only attract comic book fans but others as well. It also consists of many famous actors who from what I have seen are great in their roles. This movie could save the dc universe because of Jared Leto's Joker and Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. People would be interested to see how Leto compares to Heath Ledger's Joker. Also people would be interested whether these two actors do justice to these two popular and fantastic characters.
Why it couldn't: I have always viewed Suicide Squad as a movie to just quickly inject villains into the new dc universe. I don't personally count it as something that is meant to help support the universe. For me that should be the role of the justice league movies and each characters solo movies. Although Suicide Squad is new and different it may not necessarily have the pull for fans to have faith in the new dc universe. There is really a lot of pressure on this one film and if it flops to be honest fans would be thinking that dc tried to rush their universe building instead of taking time like marvel.
In conclusion I would say we have to wait and see how they are but I really hope that these movies are a success. My next post would probably be about how I would set up the dc universe with some film ideas. Make sure you comment to tell me what you think.
