Over the course of twelve seasons, Grey's Anatomy has taken our hearts and destroyed them completely several times. The latest reveal about April and Jackson's relationship just adds one more couple to the list of the worst breakups. This is just my ranking, please feel free to offer different opinions and suggestions as how to cope with Grey's Anatomy taking our ships away from us in two main ways - either divorce of death.

10. Derek and Addison

Cause of separation: Divorce

There was a time when this was love.
There was a time when this was love.

This is the separation and then divorce that brought Grey's Anatomy to us. The one that launched Derek to look for solace in Seattle and propelled him to fall for the girl at the bar, making the Mer and McDreamy love story something to remember for generations to come. Honorable mention to Addison and Derek's divorce. Their separation happened before the beginning of the show, but the papers were signed during the first half of season three.

Now, let's move to other couples from the least surprising to the most horrifying separation.

9. George and Callie

Cause of separation: Divorce

An odd couple, but in love.
An odd couple, but in love.

They were married for a very short period of time. It really didn't hurt that they had to be separated because for me the pair was an odd one from the beginning.

8. Christina and Burke

Cause of separation: Being jilted

Love, love, love.
Love, love, love.

I was tempted to exclude this couple from the ranking because they only made it to the engagement part of their love story. Before they could say their "I do's" Dr. Burke called it quits when he realized how much he was pushing Christina to become another woman, a woman he didn't fall in love with. However, because this non-wedding led to one of the best scenes of the third season, I'm leaving it. Who doesn't love the ending of season three when Meredith has to cut Christina our of her wedding dress? I know I do.

7. Jackson and April

Cause of separation: Divorce

Eloping can be the most romantic way to marry
Eloping can be the most romantic way to marry

The most freshly-split couple of Grey's Anatomy. These two were married for more than three years (two seasons plus a time jump) and they suffered a tragic loss that their marriage couldn't recover from. I was never a 100% April and Jackson shipper, not because they were a bad couple, I had my personal reasons. I think that they are a good match but my personal reason is Matthew, the paramedic. April's fiancee was an adorable character and I really thought that he was perfect for her, but it wasn't surprising when she chose Jackson over him. She had been pining for the heir to the Avery empire since early in their relationship.

6. Alex and Izzie

Cause of separation: Divorce

An impromptu wedding.
An impromptu wedding.

Married before the end of season five and divorced by the middle of season six, this couple's separation broke my heart because I was actually shipping them! I am sorry, but the bad-guy turned good because of love is my kryptonite, so yes. This hurt and it still is one of the major separations that makes me question the reasons why I am still a fan of this show.

5. Izzie and Denny

Cause of separation: Death

When Izzie briefly dies she finds Denny.
When Izzie briefly dies she finds Denny.

This separation hurt so bad when it happened and it became an iconic moment for the show. It was very hard to see Izzy get back to Denny's room only to find he had passed away minutes before she got there. The image of her in her prom dress laying next to his body is a shocking reminder that Grey's Anatomy is not for the faint of heart.

So much happened since then, that the emotional turmoil caused by the sudden demise of Denny has been filled with even more painful memories of other broken couples.

4. Callie and Arizona

Cause of separation: Divorce

There was a time when it was all love.
There was a time when it was all love.

This is the first of the top couples that really broke my heart when it comes to separations in Grey's Anatomy. When Callie and Arizona were married in the course of the seventh season I felt it was Shonda's message to the world about love being possible for everyone. I was happy for about two more seasons until the inevitable happened. They live in Shondaland, and either they die or divorce.

Thankfully, they divorced and we can enjoy Callie and Arizona separately and alive. I have to recognize that they put a lot of effort into fixing their marriage after Arizona cheated on Callie at the end of season nine. They tried to fix things all over the course of season ten, but sadly before the end of season eleven they part amicably.

3. Christina and Owen

Cause of separation: Divorce

Passion as no other.
Passion as no other.

Oh my god, this one still hurts so much! Even though they were separated for almost a full season, when they finally parted it was too much to avoid the tears. Owen and Christina married in the first episode of season seven and they loved each other passionately until their marriage was strained by their different views on family and children.

We all know the force of nature that is Christina Yang, and we love her for being just her. But she recognized Owen's needs and parted ways to allow them both a chance to be happy, even if it is not with each other. Because Christina is still alive in the Grey's-verse I still ship them to be together once more. Maybe someday.

2. Lexie and Mark

Cause of separation: Death

Together forever, even if not in this world.
Together forever, even if not in this world.

Talking about Mark and Lexie saddens me. Their separation during the course of season six was horrible and made me suffer deeply. I had hopes of them reuniting at some point, and during season eight when they slowly found their way back to each other (even though Mark had a girlfriend), I saw a future for them. It was the same future that Mark described as Lexie dies in the end of season eight. Grey's Anatomy, you've hurt me double with this demise, not only did you take one of my favorite characters, but you killed my favorite couple. My heart still hurts.

1. Meredith and Derek

Cause of separation: Death

A love story to remember.
A love story to remember.

The big one. The most tragic separation on Grey's Anatomy. The one couple I thought was untouchable and then in the blink of an eye. It's over.

Meredith and Derek married twice over the course of Grey's Anatomy. They signed their delightful post-it note before the end of season five and they swore they'd love each other when they were old, senile and smelly; then they got married for real during season seven to adopt their daughter, Zola. Everything was good with the world and everything remained good until Derek died before the end of season eleven.

Why do you hurt me so Shonda!
Why do you hurt me so Shonda!

I still love Grey's Anatomy, but remembering the ups and downs makes me question why I am still watching this show that tortures my soul with every breakup. I guess that I am an optimist and I want to see the glass half full. If the characters are still alive, then maybe there's a chance of them being together again.

What was the breakup, divorce or death that made you stop watching this show? Sound off in the comments!
