All those who are in a fandom must know the common term 'gender-bend' or 'gender-bending'. And for those who are not familiar with the term, well basically gender-bending is when a character's gender has swapped. So, for example, you could have Spiderman as Spidergirl. And since she is actually a hero from the Marvel comic books, her gender-bend is valid.
But this article is not only about gender-bending, oh no, but it is also about which actors can portray these roles in the movies.
So here we go, let's have some fun shall we?
1. Captain America
Did I hear a "Yes ma'am?"
Seen here is the valiant Amber Heard, portraying Marvel's Captain America. Heard has played in several films, her most popular ones being: Magic Mike XXL (2015), The Rum Diary (2011), and Drive Angry (2011). In the image above, you can see that her face is classic, one you could spot in the crowd during America's 40s. And of course, she's got Cap's iconic blonde hair and kind smile. She could definitely nail it!
2. Iron Man
Or is that Iron Woman? Wait, isn't that a movie already?
Damn Tony, you're looking fine! Here is Kate Beckinsale playing as Marvel's genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist Tony Stark. Looking at Beckinsale's latest films, there is a common theme of action-films or dark-films. She is most known for: Underworld: Awakening (2012, but also the movie series in general), Pearl Harbor (2001), Van Helsing (2004) and Total Recall (2012). Based on the picture above, Beckinsale has the fierce, alluring look that Tony has (or is it Robert?). Her hair color is a good female-change for a chic Tony Stark. And may I see, she's smokin' hot!
3. The Hulk (a.k.a puny Banner)
Don't make her angry.
Kunis really nails Bruce Banner's approach, timid yet holds more secrets underneath. Seen above, Mila Kunis portray's Marvel's Green Goliath, the Incredible Hulk. You probably recognize Kunis from her most recent film Jupiter Ascending. But other films that she is also popular for are: Friends with Benefits (2011), Black Swan (2010) and Oz the Great and Powerful. As you probably know, Bruce Banner himself as a character is a large man, and I wouldn't say that Kunis is a large woman, but the physical shape of her face is a smooth oval, a soft version of Mark Ruffalo's facade. She holds his same hair color, a quite look on her face, much like Bruce Banner. And frankly, the only thing I would be afraid of is seeing her mad!
Without a doubt, I agree that Lawrence could nail his role. Right here we have Jennifer Lawrence portraying the God of Thunder, Marvel's almighty Thor. I think everyone here knows who Lawrence is, but here's a little recap of her most popular films to date: Joy (2015), The Hunger Games Movie Series (2012-2015), Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and of course X-Men (2011-2014). Plenty of you have seen her epic acting skills, and her glorious interviews. She was even once labelled "America's New Sweetheart". Therefore, without a doubt, she could nail Chris Hemworth's role as a female Thor. She's got bold, strong features to her face, the right spring of blonde hair (though it may not be as epic as Hemsworth's, debatable) and she can be pretty hilarious. Not to bad as an Asgardian, eh?
Woah! Check out that hair! Up here we have Shailene Woodley, portraying Marvel's Marksman Extraordinaire, Hawkeye! Plenty of you probably know Woodley, especialy you Divergent fans. Here's a few of the films that she has starred in: The Fault in Our Stars (2014), The Spectacular Now (2013) and White Bird in a Blizzard (2014). As you know, Woodley is pretty good with portraying masculine rolls, so she could nail Hawkeye's speed and agility. Based on the image, and the takes we've seen from Divergent, Woodley has the right physique to be a sharpshooter. She looks strong, but still remains feminine. She's got the right playful look on her face, and yet a serious aspect. And, once again, THAT HAIR!
6. Black Widow
If public displays of affection make people uncomfortable, count me in!
We've seen him play a as a spy before, so this won't be too new. The only difference is that he's a spy who's a part of the world's finest team, The Avengers. Here we have Chris Pine portraying the redhead with a dark past, Black Widow. Pine has played a good number of movies, and if you're a Vulcan you'd know that he's James T. Kirk. Other popular films with him are: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), This Means War (2012), and Rise of the Guardians (2012). Not only does he have the looks for Widow, but he also has the wit and the strength that she holds. You may have also been surprised to see him as Widow, but remember that gender-bending goes both ways. So he's got the strength, the looks, piercing stare, and fabulous red hair. All we have to do now is throw him in the Red Room...okay sorry.
I am Loki...of Asgard...and I am burdened with glorious purpose...
Okay, I know Loki is not an avenger, but he's still Loki. Let's give him some love! I didn't actually think this would work, but Kristen would definitely kill it as Lady Loki (with short hair though). So here we have Kristen Stewart portraying Marvel's trickster, Loki Laufeyson. We all probably know her from her role as Bella from Twilight, but here's some other films that wasn't an 8 film love story: American Ultra (2015), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and Still Alice (2014). As you can tell, Stewart has the acting ability to portray a character who is quiet, yet powerful. Observative, yet thought provoking. Not only do her skills fit the character, but her looks fit Loki too. Strong jawline, pale skin (that doesn't sparkle, ehehehe) and piercing eyes! Is she worthy? She is worthy!
The Limit Does Not Exist
So now you've seen some gender-bending a la Marvel. Can you imagine how many other actors would fit the role for gender-bending comic characters?! So that doesn't only mean Marvel, I mean, LOOK AT THIS:
Yes that is Miss Quinzel...well Mr. I mean, the limit does not exist!
Which other gender-bends would you like to see?
