We haven't got long now until [X-Men: Apocalypse](tag:1194267) is released, and the cast have started building the hype for the movie. Oscar Isaac is ready to stun us with his godlike Apocalypse, and Olivia Munn has dropped hints about Psylocke's role. After Quicksilver was confirmed to be Magneto's son, Evan Peters chimed in to reveal his character's role in the story. But does he have to compete with Magneto's "new family"?
Quicksilver's On A Mission
Let's backtrack for a second: how to we know Quicksilver is Magneto's son? The answer of course lies in the original comics, but Peter's parentage was also touched on in Days Of Future Past...
"They told me you control metal. You know, my mom once knew a guy who could do that."
Some people assumed this was just an Easter egg, a cheeky nod at the comic canon which has Magneto as the father of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (or it used to, until Marvel's recent retcon). But recently Evan Peters confirmed that yes, Quicksilver is Magneto's son, and he's out to save his father...
"The story is that my character is searching for his father and wants to find him. It starts there and then he jumps on the X-Men train and gets sucked up in this whole Apocalypse madness: He tries to stop him from destroying the world."
Each of the characters in X-Men: Apocalypse have complex motivations, and it seems as though Quicksilver's reason for joining the X-Men is to save his father. Which is very sweet.
But it seems as though Magneto might not appreciate the help...
Wait, So Magneto Has ANOTHER Kid?
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Michael Fassbender revealed that in the years between Days Of Future Past and Apocalypse, Magneto started his own family.
"So he disappears. He falls in love, in Poland, and they have a child and he starts a family. He basically tries to live a normal life. And human beings of course come and spoil things again. And then along comes Apocalypse."
They should just rename the movie X-Men: Keeping Up With The Lensherrs and have done with it.
So it seems as though Peter might have some family competition... although the fact that Magneto joins Apocalypse's world-ending cult does suggest that his game of happy families was interrupted. Probably by humans "spoiling things" - did Erik's family get murdered? That definitely seems to be what Fassbender is suggesting...
"Apocalypse finds Erik at a low ebb and recruits him."
Ultimately, it looks like Quicksilver's mission to save his father could prove to Magneto that there are things in the world still worth fighting for. What with Erik's other family dying, it's likely that Peter's loyalty will go a long way to persuading Magneto to betray Apocalypse. Which is a pretty cool plot line.
