Filming of the new Power Rangers movie started today here in Vancouver, and Lionsgate has released their first official synopsis to coincide with the first day of filming.
Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
Since the film was announced, there has been speculation over exactly how we would see the Power Rangers brought to life on the big screen. Fans of the original '90s tv series have been hoping for a reboot of the classic show (please!), but there have been so many spin offs since then that this film could be pretty much anything.
However, with the villain confirmed as Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) and the classic team back together (Pink, Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black rangers), it looks like we are getting a straight-up reboot of the show that started it all.
This new synopsis doesn't tell us much more than we already knew, though.
The alien threat is (obviously) Rita and her minions (possibly with an appearance or mention of Lord Zedd?). "Chosen by destiny" is an interesting line, as well. In the original series, the Rangers were chosen by another alien wizard, Zordon, to become morphin' ninja warriors. Could this film give us a new twist on the classic origin? Perhaps the teens find the Power Coins (that give them their power) rather than having Zordon bestow them on the group. This could be a major twist that provides the movie with something new, while keeping everything that made the original such addictive viewing!
There's one original team member missing, and that also tells us something. Green Ranger has yet to be mentioned in connection with the film. At first, the Green Ranger was an enemy of the team, working for Rita. However, he soon became one of the "good guys," and even the best-known Ranger by the end of the series. He has not appeared in casting lists or character descriptions thus far either, suggesting that either he will not be in the film, or that (like in the show) he will appear later on. If this is the case, then signs are pointing more and more to a direct tv-to-big-screen reboot.
We will undoubtedly find out more as filming gets going; who else will be making an appearance? Will we see the Zords, and more importantly, the Megazord? How close will the movie stick to the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? For the time being, however, we have just over a year to go before we find out if this new take on the classic franchise will be the incredible, action-packed nostalgia-fest we are looking for... or a let-down cashing in on the popularity of superheroes.
'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' is scheduled for release March 24th, 2017.
