Wonder Woman has waited a long time for her debut on the big screen, and her eagerly anticipated arrival is one of the reasons fans are so excited for [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870). And yet, so far we haven't seen much of her. Either the trailers are playing down her role, or she just isn't that involved in the film.

But fear not: the latest updates definitely imply that the latter is true. And Diana Prince's secret mission is the key not only to the plot of Batman vs Superman, but is also crucial to set up Justice League Part One...

Wonder Woman v Lex Luthor

Of course, we all know that the main plot of Dawn Of Justice will be the fight between Batman and Superman. But there's a lot more going on in this story, especially when it comes to Lex Luthor.

The rumour that Lex Luthor is kidnapping and experimenting on metahumans has been floating around the net for a while now. This is mostly thanks to this leaked script summary which actually, is probably legit. Luthor's obsession with metahumans is one of Batman vs Superman's main plot threads. But Diana's already on to him, as Zack Snyder revealed to Empire...

"You learn pretty early on that Lex is interested in metahuman existence, and that there might be some relationship between that investigation and the appearance of Diana Prince."

So it looks like Diana's investigation on the disappearing metahumans leads her straight to Lex Luthor. It's good to know that while Bats and Supes are butting heads, at least someone's actually trying to stop the megalomaniacal villain.

This is actually very intriguing when we consider what else we know about Wonder Woman...

One Decade Away From Retirement

According to Gal Gadot, Diana has actually all but retired from the hero business by the time Dawn Of Justice rolls around.

"She’s seen it all. She has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight."

We're going to get some clues about why Diana's a bit jaded about humanity in her 2017 solo movie, but considering she's over 5,000 years old (so says Snyder), she probably deserves a break from saving the day all the time.

So what causes Wonder Woman to rejoin the fight in Dawn Of Justice? It would take something pretty big, which she has a vested interest in, to drag her back into the superhero life. Concern for metahumans might be just the mission she needs: they are, after all, her people. And in her investigation of Lex Luthor, Diana might just be setting up the DCEU's biggest upcoming event...

Building The Justice League

Zack Snyder's most famous statement about Wonder Woman is that she's "the gateway drug to the Justice League". Now, we're starting to understand why.

If she really is investigating Lex Luthor, as all signs seem to suggest, then it could be that the metahuman plot will bring in other heroes like Aquaman and the Flash. Jason Momoa's appearance in Batman vs Superman is pretty much a dead cert, and Ezra Miller (Flash) has apparently also been confirmed to appear.

It's entirely possible that Luthor has actually captured them, or is chasing them down for his experiments, and that's what the leaked synopsis suggests. In this way, Wonder Woman's involvement in Batman vs Superman doesn't just lead into Justice League because she inspires Batman and Superman to work together. It looks like her own mission to stop Lex Luthor brings about the introduction of Aquaman and Flash to the DCEU, and that's pretty awesome.
