In the last edition I talked about The Underrated True Power Of The Martian Manhunter. In this edition (as a result of your votes), The Flash is speeding in!
The Flash is a superhero who is often considered to be unworthy of being in the Justice League. A common misconception is that The Flash simply "runs fast," which isn't considered to be a huge deal since Superman can do the same. However, what people don't realize is that The Flash (Barry Allen) is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe. Here's why!

His Powers

  • Phasing: The Flash can vibrate his body so fast, that he is able to pass through/phase through objects. He can literally run through walls.
  • Light Speed Reaction: Any incarnation of The Scarlet Speedster can move, think, and react at the speed of light with no problems at all. This allows him to outwit his enemies.
  • Healing Factor: Due to their extremely active metabolism, speedsters have the ability to heal extremely fast, as their body speeds up the process.
  • Time Travel: The Flash has the ability to travel to any point in time, both in the past as well as the future.
  • Speed Read: While this may seem like a "lame" power, The Flash is able to process vast amounts of information within a matter of seconds.
  • Immunity to Telepathy: As his mind runs and thinks at an exceptionally fast pace, the Flash is immune to telepathy or mind control, even from beings as powerful as J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter and Gorilla Grodd.
  • Throw Lightning: As explored on the TV show, Flash can channel the energy he creates while running and direct it at someone (or something) as a bolt of lightning.
  • Vortexes: The Flash can spin his arms at high velocities to create vortexes, which can be utilized for various purposes — even to fly. They can be as powerful as tornadoes.
  • Mirage Appearance: The Flash can run so fast that he often appears to be in two places at once, like a mirage.
  • Infinite Mass Punch: Which is exactly what it sounds like — he can hit his opponents with one devastating punch.
  • Negate the Anti-Life Equation: The Anti-Life equation allows the user to dominate all forms of life by controlling their minds at once. Barry Allen has the ability to negate its effect.

However, it's not just his powers that make him so dynamic. It's their capabilities, and what he can achieve with them. Let's take a look at some of his feats.

The Flashpoint Paradox

Remember that little event called The Flashpoint Paradox? Yes, that little thing back in 2011 which reset the whole DC Universe and introduced the New 52. That was caused due to Barry traveling back in time and saving his mother from being murdered when he was a child. This led to several severe repercussions, and when he woke up, the world was a changed place, on the brink of destruction. The timeline was completely destroyed. All because he decided to perform the simple act of saving his mother, and by doing so, he completely altered the time stream.

The point being, a small action in the past can lead to disastrous consequences, altering the future completely. And this is why time travel is one of his most dangerous powers. He could change the fate or outcome of anything he wanted, and could destroy the entire world.

There was that time when he outran an Omega Beam

Darkseid's Omega Beams never miss a target. However, the Flash was able to outrun it long enough to phase through a parademon and make the Omega Beam hit the wrong target — something even Superman was unable to do.

The Watchtower's computers are too slow for him

Designed by Batman himself, they have the capability to compute a hundred thousand trillion calculations per second, which is still waaay too slow for Barry.

He can negate the effect of the Anti-Life Equation

The Anti-Life Equation allows the user to dominate all life in the universe. During the 2008 event of Final Crisis, Barry Allen cures his wife Iris from Darkseid's influence, who was controlling everyone on Earth at once through the Equation.

He can perceive things that last less than an attosecond

Just process that for a moment.

Due to his accelerated senses, he can see everything that is happening, and therefore calculate the best solution for any given problem.

The Infinite Mass Punch

As a body approaches light speed, the relative mass becomes infinitely high, therefore allowing The Flash to provide a massive punch. As seen in the panel above, he hits Züm (a White Martian) so hard that he is knocked back at a speed of 7 miles/sec, achieving escape velocity.

He can outrun a nuclear blast while evacuating a whole city

Evacuating over 500,000 people in 0.00001microseconds. And someone actually went through the trouble to actually calculate how fast that is...

... approximately adding up to 13 trillion times the speed of light.

But what about his weaknesses?

Truth be told, there is no limit to how fast he can run. He can go faster depending on the situation. However, for all his powers, the Flash is quite carefree and even slightly careless, so he can be trapped quite easily. He is also vulnerable to cold temperatures (as he cannot run on them), giving villains like Captain Cold and Killer Frost an edge over him. That's also the primary reason why a majority of his arch-enemies are speedsters.

The one thing that is the biggest threat to the Scarlet Speedster is his own speed. If he runs too fast, or for too long, his life force can be absorbed by the Speed Force. Kind of like what happened during the Crisis On Infinite Earths storyline, where Barry Allen sacrificed himself to save the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor.

Hopefully this article made you appreciate the character more, if you didn't know much about him.
