Though it's unknown whether this project will actually be a sequel to 2013 masterpiece The Last of Us, there have been numerous references and revelations that point toward the existence of The Last Of Us 2.

News will seep out over time and we'll be sure to update this article accordingly, thus giving you a full chronological cycle of events and information regarding the release and development process of Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us 2.

Nolan North Confirms 'The Last Of Us 2'?

At Metrocon: Anime Convention in Tampa, Florida on June 29, 2015, North held a Q&A session, during which he might have revealed the existence of The Last Of Us 2. At the end of the conference he takes one last question, which asks whether he has future Naughty Dog projects lined up after Uncharted 4, and responds with the following:

"For now, last one. I know [Naughty Dog is] doing a 'Last Of Us 2,' but my character in 'Last Of Us' kind of had an untimely demise."

Neil Druckmann Responds

Druckmann then jokingly responded to everyone's excitement over North's statement in an interview with Official Playstation Magazine:

"I can say that was kind of a surprise for us for him to say that. I was like 'Oh he knows more than we know [about] what we're doing next.' We joked about it afterwards during shoots and stuff."

When asked about The Last Of Us 2, he went on to give the following statement:

"The answer is - and this is totally honest, and I've said this in the past - that when Bruce (Straley) and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last Of Us 2 with new characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas. And just as we were getting close to settling or narrowing that list down, we were asked to work on Uncharted 4.
"So, I guess he (North) was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don't know what we're doing next and we won't know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4."

'The First Last Of Us'?

During an Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection livestream on September 14, 2015 Uncharted series writer Josh Scherr had a slip of the tongue and said the following when referencing the art of his co-worker: "All of the Uncharted games and the first The Last Of Us."

His co-worker Eric Baldwin, a facial animator at Naughty Dog, immediately recognized his error and attempted to backpedal, but he couldn't seem to come up with anything else to say. "Uh, did I say 'the first The Last Of Us'? The first The Last Of Us. Uh, The Last Of Us! The first Last Of Us."

'The Last Of Us 2': Summary

So far we're aware that Druckmann and Bruce Straley began brainstorming the idea of The Last of Us 2 following the release of the original. They explored the idea of a sequel with Joel and Ellie, and a sequel with completely new characters. They were also brainstorming new game ideas (such as a sci-fi game and a fantasy adventure), but were then asked to lead Naughty Dog with Uncharted 4. This put an end to The Last Of Us 2, and will most likely keep its development on hold until Nathan Drake's last game gets a release date on May 10.
