Despite its lackluster ratings and mixed reviews, Agent Carter has maintained a dedicated cult following over its two seasons. Tonight, the show's second season comes to a close, and those who love following the adventures of Peggy Carter and Jarvis are left wondering whether or not the show will return for a third installment.

After Hayley Atwell joined the cast for the pilot of ABC's Conviction, people have been quick to speculate that Agent Carter is coming to an end, since filming two shows at once could cause serious scheduling conflicts. But in a recent interview with IGN, Atwell was only too happy to remind us to not jump to conclusions:

"ABC has assured me that it would be actually possible, if both shows get picked up, for me to do both. So by saying yes to the pilot of Conviction does not automatically say that that’s it for Peggy and Jarvis at all. It just means that they had a show that they liked me to do and there is a possibility to do both at some point. We also know that because Peggy has been in other Marvel films and we know she lives a long life, this is something that can be revisited. This is something that I think has a cult following and I have every hope that we’ll see more of her in the future."

Given her penchant for popping up in other Marvel storylines and her long, long life, even if we don't see another season of the show next year, Atwell has plenty of time to come back as Agent Carter.

As for tonight's finale, Atwell made it clear that it won't totally appease those who wants to say goodbye to her character for good, but leaves the door open, depending on the fate of the program:

"I would hope so. I think there’s so much more to explore. The finale suggests a couple of cliffhangers that would make us go, 'Oh, what does that mean?' The finale doesn’t suggest that that’s it and they live happily ever after; that’s the end. We know that’s not the case. They’ve done it in a very clever way which wraps up and that gives the audience a very satisfying conclusion but they’re not quite finishing it and leaving it there."

So let's not write off Agent Carter just yet! With enough love from fans and a killer Season 2 finale, a third season definitely isn't out of the question.

The finale for Season 2 of 'Agent Carter' will air tonight on ABC.
