The wave of remakes rolls ever onwards, with Dario Argento's 1977 masterpiece Suspiria in the works. Director Luca Guadagnino revealed in a recent Q&A that he has cast Only Lovers Left Alive star Tilda Swinton as the head of a fiendish coven of witches - a casting unlikely to raise any objection from the horror community - but also that Fifty Shades of Grey leading lady Dakota Johnson will appear.
Johnson certainly fits the bill for the kind of beautiful ingenue favored by the giallo greats, so this casting may not be as incongruous as it seems... Let's see if the remake can come close to the mind-blowing intensity of the original Suspiria.
If you haven't seen Dario Argento's 1977 original, go watch it immediately. Or, y'know, just read this synopsis:
“In a stormy night, the American dancer Suzy Bannion arrives in Freiburg coming from New York to join a famous and expensive ballet school for a three years training. On the next morning, she is informed by the direction of the school that a student she met leaving the place on the previous night was violently murdered and the police is investigating the crime. She becomes friend of another student, Sara, and she realizes that the house is indeed a coven of evil witches.”
