If you were like me, you figured it would take at least 6-8 months for the home release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, we got some good news today! Disney has announced that the seventh installment of Star Wars will hit Blu-Ray/DVD on April 5, 2016. If you're more eager, you can snatch it early on Digital HD on April 1, 2016.
The trailer gives us information as to what special features we will be receiving, too. Along with the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, we will have a full-length documentary about the making of the film, deleted scenes, interviews, reflections on the table reads of the script, how the special effects came to life, and much more.

(March 3, 2016)—Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattered box office records upon its debut to become the cinematic event of a generation with over $926 million domestic and $2.05 billion worldwide. As announced this morning by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Iger at The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders, the epic movie will be available to own early on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere on April 1. This is very exciting, but be cautious with your pre-order
Before you hop on Amazon to pre-order, keep this in mind. If you want all of these special features you might want to do some research to be sure that you're buying the right version. From what I can tell, this announcement is regarding the Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital HD combo pack and not just a plain Blu-Ray or DVD copy.
Also bear in mind that a lot of retailers will release specific, store-exclusive versions that include some features that other copies don't. This might include extra bonus features, additional prizes, steelbooks, or different cover artwork. The official Star Wars announcement has specifics on store exclusives to be released by Target, Walmart, and Best Buy.
