My friends are sick of hearing my nerdy rants so I'll do them here.

We can all agree that Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim was simply awesome. Watching giant robots punch giant monsters in the face brought out my inner ten-year-old in a way that hasn't happened since I was ten. Despite the less than fantastic dialogue and the slightly dissatisfying plot, the film was visually stunning and filled with fantastic action. It was simply a good time.

With Pacific Rim: Maelstrom production being "halted indefinitely," Guillermo Del Torro no longer directing, and no release date in sight we really don't know when we will see more Jaegers and Kaiju. The rumors floating around Pacific Rim: Maelstrom (to be taken with a pinch of salt) will follow the living characters of the first movie into a post-kaiju world. Raleigh, Mako, Dr. Charlie Day, and all our favorite cast of characters are gonna return, minus the dead ones...

There are definitely things to see more of in Del Torro's "Pacifiverse" but the rumored plot is not what I wanted to see. Obviously, there will be a bigger and badder threat in Maelstrom, but I don't think that plot sounds like the most fun we could have with the opportunity to for another look into the "Pacifiverse". I propose a prequel

"Pacific Rim 2: Glory Days"

I know, no one likes prequels anymore, since George Lucas barfed up his three CGI prequels, but just give a Pacific Rim prequel a chance. One of the most intriguing parts of Pacific Rim was the title montage containing the history of the Kaiju War before Raleigh's brother Yancy died.

The "Glory Days" of the Kaiju war has lore filled with fantastical battles and great, cocky, yet entertaining characters. In his voiceover, Charlie Hunnum says that the humans started to win. They got really good at it. The movie would follow this period and first generation Jaeger Pilots. These superstar pilots will balance the risks they have to take and the consequences of the radioactive exposure we see Idris Elba's character subjected to.

This movie could serve like a classic prequel or more like an informative side story. Either way, it would be awesome. We could get all the robots punching monsters in the face without this BS:

Or this....

But Starring:

Come on who doesn't want to see another movie like this starring the a cast of cocky, badass, fighters inside giant a robot punching progressively bigger monsters in the face.

How could this idea be pulled off successfully?

As a prequel, this movie would have to add to the ethos of the "Pacifiverse", but also make a good, complete movie, that does not feel like a rehashing of the same story. This can be achieved in multiple ways:

  • In order to expand the ethos, this movie can show the audience, in more detail, the origins of the human resistance and survival in the wake of the first invasion of San Francisco.
  • It could cover humans figuring out how to build Jaegers, how to beat the Kaiju's, and the success of the first years of the war.
  • To avoid this prequel feeling like just more of the same as the original, a different tone could be employed. This movie would follow the human protagonists beginning in devastation, and fighting to glory, but their road will only get more difficult. It would function more in the structure of a disaster movie.
  • These characters will have their own struggle, different from the last stand in Pacific Rim. They will struggle with the nuclear poisoning Idris Elba's Character was subjected to. A sub-plot would emerge among the first generation Jaeger Pilots and their struggles with fighting this war and the risks of the radiation.

I am not a Hollywood story exec. I do not really know if this could work, or if Legendary Pictures would even consider a prequel, but that doesn't matter. I am a fan of this movie and would love to see a second movie that is even better. This is just my idea.

Then again, I may just be crazy.

Like this idea?
