(Warning: The following contains mild potential SPOILERS for future entries in the DC Cinematic Universe, including the forthcoming "Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice." Proceed with whatever level of caution suggests to you is wise...)
Now, with the imminently arriving Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice looking set to feature, well, the "Dawn" of the Justice League, it's perhaps no real surprise that erstwhile League members Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash are all looking likely to cameo alongside the already revealed Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman.
What is perhaps a little more surprising, however, is that the folks over at Warner Bros have remained far more reticent about their future plans for a certain green-ring-wielding crime fighter. The reason, as it turns out?
Green Lantern Isn't Set To Appear In The DCEU For A Long While Yet
Yup, that's right. As Greg Silverman, the president of creative development and worldwide production over at Warner Bros, revealed in a recent interview with EW, Green Lantern not only won't be appearing in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, but he might not turn up until after the Justice League movies. As Silverman put it:
"Every beat of the movie is not yet worked out. So there’s the possibility that [Green Lantern] may or may not be in Justice League 2 ... For now, we felt that we were introducing enough characters that the best possible place we could put Green Lantern is some introduction in Justice League 2, or barring that, a movie after."
It Seems The Failure Of The Last 'Green Lantern' Movie Has Pushed The Hero's DCEU Arrival Back
That, at least, seems to be the underlying implication of Silverman's other comments on the matter, seeing as he took time to note that:
"[Green Lantern] is an incredible character. He’s actually multiple incredible characters...There’s real opportunity there. We didn’t do a great job on that first Green Lantern movie. This is a character who deserves to be treated in the same way that Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman are being treated now, which is with great reverence. I guess I can say to the Green Lantern fans: if they can be patient with us, I think they’ll be really happy."
Or, in other words? Warner Bros is well aware that the Green Lantern brand is currently a little tarnished and, as a result, the DCEU is being given time to establish itself before his arrival. It's arguably a similar approach to Marvel's with Guardians Of The Galaxy and Ant-Man — saving the riskier properties until the overarching brand is established enough to make them safe bets — with the added bonus of giving fans time to forget that they largely hated the 2011 movie.
The main takeaway from all of that? We might well not see Green Lantern on the big screen until his solo movie in 2020 — which means we might all have to start stockpiling some patience.
What do you think?
When do you reckon we'll first see Green Lantern?
