Movie stars are generally known as the "beautiful people," but sometimes actors and actresses must undergo make-unders to play certain roles. Many of Hollywood's most beautiful talents have gotten "ugly" for a role; some remain a little similar, whereas others have become completely unrecognizable. Here are 12 celebrities that have become less 'attractive' for their craft.
12. Salma Hayek - 'Frida'
Latina beauty Salma Hayek is known for her flawless beauty and charming accent, but in 2002, she got "ugly" for her role in Frida. Even with a monobrow and lady-stache, she is still gorgeous.
11. Ryan Gosling - 'Blue Valentine'
Is it possible to make Ryan Gosling unattractive? Apparently, because in 2010's Blue Valentine, he spent half the film being his usual gorgeous self and the latter half balding and depressed. Even unattractive, he is still attractive.
10. Johnny Depp - 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'
Depp is a regular chameleon; almost every one of his roles has required him to make a dramatic transformation of some kind. But none have been more unattractive than his role as author Hunter S. Thompson in 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Depp's make-under included a receding hairline, ridiculous sunglasses and some very questionable fashion choices.
9. Rooney Mara - 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'
Rooney Mara is a stunning beauty with a girl-next-door smile. She was cast to play the no-nonsense hacker Lisbeth Salander in 2011's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. She may have been made-under, but even through tons of piercings and shaved eyebrows, she's still beautiful.
8. Nicole Kidman - 'The Hours'
The stunning Australian beauty Nicole Kidman is known for her gorgeous eyes and flawless skin, but in the 2002 film The Hours, she (mostly her nose) got a serious overhaul. To play the role of Virginia Woolf, Kidman had to don a rather prominent nose and a fresh face under a halo of unkempt hair.
7. Cameron Diaz - 'Being John Malkovich'
Since her appearance in The Mask, men have lusted after Cameron Diaz and women have wanted to look more like her, but what happens when you take a bombshell and make her a plain Jane? The answer: her role as Lotte (a timid woman with a frizzy perm) in 1999's Being John Malkovich. She looks more like the average woman, and she is still gorgeous without her signature blue eyes.
6. James Franco - 'Spring Breakers'
James Franco has often been referred to as the James Dean of his generation, but for the 2012 crime flick Spring Breakers he looked a little more like Riff Raff's busted little brother. Franco had to don braids, a grill, tattoos and some creeper sunglasses to make him almost unrecognizable as Alien.
5. Tom Cruise - 'Tropic Thunder'
The normally good looking Tom Cruise usually plays the gorgeous spy type roles, but in his cameo in 2008's Tropic Thunder, he is far from an attractive super spy. Cruise played Les Grossman, and his name fit his appearance (fat, bald and sweaty with a terrible accent).
4. Christian Bale - 'American Hustle'
Christian Bale (the dreamy actor with a hot temper) is known for his extreme body changes for roles. His physique is usually trimmed and toned, but for his role as Irving Rosenfeld in 2013's crime hit American Hustle, he was looking a bit bloated. Smoking cigars in his tighty whities was not a good look for him.
3. Gwyneth Paltrow - 'Shallow Hal'
The uniquely beautiful Gwyneth Paltrow is not used to being the "ugly girl" at all, so her role in the 2001 comedy Shallow Hal was an eye-opener for her. She had to wear a fat suit and prosthetic pieces on her face (she was still beautiful), and she has stated several times that she felt degraded and ignored while she was in the suit and makeup.
2. Jared Leto - 'Suicide Squad'
With piercing blue eyes, great hair and the face (and voice) of an angel, Jared Leto is without a doubt a "pretty boy." Every female, myself included, thought it was impossible to make him unattractive, but we were wrong. For his role as The Joker in the upcoming DC epic, Suicide Squad, Leto sports pale skin, green hair, less than artistic tattoos, wrinkles and busted dental work. But who are we kidding? He's still not 100% unattractive.
1. Charlize Theron - 'Monster'
Charlize Theron is a goddess among mortals, she can do no wrong. Whether she is a wicked step-mother or a post-apocalyptic badass with a buzz cut, she's beautiful, but when she stepped up to play notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003's Monster, she was unrecognizable. Theron gained more than 30 pounds and wore a ton of makeup making her the top make-under thus far in cinematic history.
The next time you're having an "unattractive day," take a look at some of these transformations and you won't feel so bad. Just know that even Hollywood's most beautiful people can look normal, and some can look down right unattractive.
