In the last 10-15 years, the superhero genre has become huge, even overtaking some other popular genres, such as action, in the box-office. Over the next few years, there are a lot of eagerly awaited superhero films due to be released thanks to the success of superhero movies over the last fifteen years. With that in mind, here are the top 5 most successful superhero films to date, by box office numbers.
5. The Dark Knight (2008)
Still considered to be one of DC Comics' best films to date, The Dark Knight raked in a huge worldwide gross of $1,004,558,444. The film is one of the biggest in the Batman series, and paved a way for more Batman films to come. Part of the appeal of the film was possibly Heath Ledger's amazing performance as The Joker, as his Joker is considered to be one of the best in the history of the character. Whether or not this is the case, The Dark Knight scored big at the box office, easily outstripping all previously made DC films.

4. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The sequel to The Dark Knight was clearly eagerly anticipated, as it drew in a gross of $1,084,939,099. Although it's arguable whether or not this film was better than its predecessor, it was certainly more successful. It was probably so well-received as fans from The Dark Knight eagerly awaited the next installment. Sequels usually do better than their predecessors, as the case is here. It was still an amazing film, but The Dark Knight is more of a fan favourite.

3. Iron Man 3 (2013)
The finale to the epic trilogy that started the MCU ended with a bang, making a worldwide gross of $1,215,439,994. After The Avengers, fans were clearly eager to see what Marvel had up its sleeve next. Although Iron Man 3 wasn't quite as popular as The Avengers, it was a huge film and briefly held the spot of the fifth highest grossing film of all time. As the last of the trilogy, it was very popular among Iron Man fans. It was perhaps so big because of the hype surrounding it and rumours at the time that Robert Downey Jr. wouldn't be reprising the role again after this film.

2. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
The sequel to Marvel's 2012 hit, Avengers: Age of Ultron brought in a worldwide gross of $1,405,413,868. The film had been eagerly awaited pretty much since the first one came out, and fans weren't (for the most part) disappointed with the film. It also served to advance the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing in (and killing) more characters who will go on to participate in Marvel's Phase 3 and Infinity War.

1. Marvel's The Avengers (2012)
The most successful superhero film of all time, The Avengers brought in a massive gross of $1,519,557,910, putting it in place of the fifth highest grossing film of all time. The Avengers was an eagerly awaited film as it brought together six superheroes that Marvel had been toying with for several years, with the characters already well-established and fan favourites. The long set-up seemed to work and thousands upon thousands of people rushed to the cinema to see it. It marked the real beginning of the MCU and brought to life Marvel's biggest superhero team-up (albeit with different and much less superheroes). The Avengers was also the third highest grossing film of all time (beaten only by Titanic and Avatar) at one point, before being overtaken by newer films Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Regardless, it hasn't dropped out of the fifth spot and remains to be the most successful superhero film ever released.
