I was very excited when I first heard about this film, after all, it isn't often that you find media depicting selkies! I'm happy to say that this film definitely delivered, with gorgeous animation, character designs, and rich color palettes throughout the film. It was filled with a decent amount of action and suspense, keeping the viewer entertained and occasionally on the edge of their seat, unsure of whether everything will work out in the end. The film has a strong theme of family, focusing on the relationship between the brother and sister.
This film has the perfect mixture of Irish folklore, family, mystery and magic. It is very intense and moving at times, so get ready to cry a ton! This movie follows Ben, a boy depressed by his mother's disappearance. He has a conflicted relationship with Siersha, his younger sister, who was born on the beach before her mother disappeared. The adventure begins when Siersha finds a white coat with a special power and the siblings' grandmother takes them away from their island to the city. (I'm trying not to give spoilers!) Ben and Siersha go on an adventure filled with twists, turns, and a great ending. The end is a bit scary but not much. You will notice connections between the magical creatures and normal ones. This touching film has beautiful animation and a story that you won't be able to steer away from.
Song of the Sea is an emotional hayride and beautifully drawn. You will grow close to Ben and Siersha and root for them all the way. I highly recommend this film as both a visual masterpiece and as beautifully written story.
