Although an adaptation of Assassin's Creed is only due to hit big screens next December, the news on the block is that Ubisoft and New Regency are already planning to bring a sequel into play. Indeed, it seems that the producers are so confident that the video game adaptation is going to blow our minds, that they are already planning a second installment.
And guess what? It's been confirmed that two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender is already on board to bring the action-adventure Assassins Creed 2 to life. According to The Tracking Board:
That the studio is already laying the groundwork for the sequel is hardly surprising, given the international appeal of both the game and its star, Fassbender. But skeptics of video game-based films may interpret this move as a sign of confidence from those involved that, unlike previous attempts to bring popular video game properties to the big screen, Assassin’s Creed could not only work--but thrive.
In addition to acting in the sequel, Fassbender is also rumored to be joining the production team alongside leads from Ubisoft Motion Pictures and DMC Films.
The upcoming film, to be released in December, will focus on the Assassin's Creed series, starring Fassbender as modern day man Callum Lynch who uses ultra-advanced technology to enter the 'genetic memories' of his ancestor Aguilar — a member of a guild of secret assassins waging war against The Templars.
Without a doubt the first installment is going to be impressive, what with Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard also participating in the project. Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, and Brendan Gleeson will also star.
Let's just hope that a movie franchise like this will save the infamous video game series, whose recent releases have been receiving somewhat middling reactions in recent years. Only time will tell...
Assassin's Creed will hit theaters on December 21, 2016.
