He's long been a champion of the project, stirring up support online and campaigning to the studio execs. But Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, has admitted that he doesn't expect to sit for hours on end in the makeup chair any time soon.

Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) feature Perlman as the titular character, a surly and powerful demon who works for a government organization called the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, who protects the world from the threats of various fantastical creatures.

Whilst promoting the second series of Amazon Prime's Hand of God he revealed to Variety that he is no longer as optimistic about the project, stating that:

‘...[it] probably will never happen, though you never say never never...'

Since The Golden Army, arrived back in 2008, director Guillermo del Toro has openly supported the project, vocally hoping that he and Perlman could complete the popular trilogy.

Del Toro stated that he would ensure it progressed, only if work on a sequel to Pacific Rim (2013) was green-lit. After a troubled period, this Pacific Rim 2 looks set to become a reality, albeit with a new director.

With such a busy schedule, del Toro looks unlikely to return to Hellboy anytime soon, so perhaps Perlman's lack of optimism might be well founded.

Whilst it is not the franchises' death knell per-se, for fans of the series this is a saddening admission from its most prominent supporter.
