Wonder Woman has waited a long time for her debut on the big screen, and her eagerly anticipated arrival is one of the reasons fans are so excited for [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870). And yet, so far we haven't seen much of her. Either the trailers are playing down her role, or she just isn't that involved in the film.
But fear not, the latest updates definitely imply that the latter is true. As the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly reveals, Diana Prince has a secret mission which is crucial not only to the plot of Batman vs Superman, but also to Justice League Part One...
Diana Prince vs. Lex Luthor
There's more to Lex Luthor than just goading Batman and Superman into fighting each other: his obsession with metahumans is a main plot thread of Dawn Of Justice. But Diana's already on to him, and her mission to investigate the disappearance of metahumans is a compelling plotline within the movie, according to EW...
For most of the movie we see her as alter-ego Diana Prince – a glamorous covert agent, working only for herself, who runs afoul of Bruce Wayne as they engage in rival missions to steal some of Luthor’s most disconcerting secrets. She’s not like a Bond girl – more like James Bond himself.
This comes as excellent news for those of us hoping Wonder Woman wouldn't just be there to provide backup to Batman and Superman in the fight against Doomsday. Diana's role in Dawn Of Justice isn't just a cameo, it's an introduction to one of humanity's greatest heroes. And there are going to be plenty of hints for her solo movie...
Wonder Woman's Journey To Heroism
A month ago, Zack Snyder revealed some interesting facts about Wonder Woman, most notably that she's 5,000 years old and on the brink of hero retirement when Batman vs Superman occurs.
So what has Diana been doing for these thousands of years? It seems rather complicated, and the solo movie will explore how Diana actually became the hero we know and love. But there does seem to be a tragedy in her past: Entertainment Weekly revealed that Wonder Woman had been "lying low for decades," which implies that she's exactly a legendary superhero. Has Diana been fighting crime in the shadows instead?
Whatever she's been doing, it seems that Wonder Woman relishes the opportunity for an all-out brawl: executive producer Geoff Johns waxes lyrical about Diana's role in the fight against Doomsday.
"I love her in the movie. I love when she’s hit by Doomsday and she turns around and smiles, like she hasn’t been in a fight like this in a long, long time. She clearly… she missed it."
But Wonder Woman's role in Batman vs Superman doesn't just set up her solo movie: she's also crucial to establishing a connection to DC's biggest movie event yet.
Founding The Justice League
Zack Snyder's most famous statement about Wonder Woman is that she's "the gateway drug to the Justice League." Now, we're starting to understand why.
It could be that the metahuman plot will bring in other heroes like Aquaman and the Flash. Jason Momoa's appearance in Batman vs Superman is pretty much a dead cert (he's confirmed on IMDB), and Ezra Miller (Flash) has apparently also been confirmed to appear.
It's entirely possible that Luthor has actually captured them, or is chasing them down for the metahuman experiments that Diana is investigating. In this way, Wonder Woman's involvement in Batman vs Superman doesn't just lead into Justice League because she inspires Batman and Superman to work together. It looks like her own mission to stop Lex Luthor brings about the introduction of Aquaman and Flash to the DCEU, and that's pretty awesome.
