In all honesty, this is kind of a difficult post to write, mainly because I've had to go through a plethora of unsettling pictures that bring back nightmarish memories of my childhood strictly for your entertainment. But I guess it's by my own doing considering I'm the one who comes up with the article content, which begs the question... WHY THE HELL AM I DOING THIS?? I don't... I don't know, man. I just am. So let's just get through this together shall we?

4. Teletubbies

Does this really need an explanation? Does anybody even know what what this show is about? This bizarre show debuted in 1997, and ran until 2002, and believe it or not actually got a reboot in 2015. Not that any of you really care, but it did. This show, while not initially creepy or scary, was unsettling because of the bizarre lack of anything really happening. It's just people in ridiculous costumes making weird noises running around doing infantile things. Watch this weird video clip and tell me this isn't the weirdest thing ever.

Is that not just mind-boggling? This effing show won a BAFTA award in 2002!!! WHY???? Fortunately the brilliant people at IMDB have this show rated as a 3.4 out of 10 based on 4,362 votes. Some people like to have a lot of fun with the nonsense on this show creating conspiracy theories about hidden agendas within the show and that it is secretly relaying disturbing messages to our children. While that is all conspiracies and speculation, let me show you one picture that sealed the deal proving once and for all that this show was all kinds of evil.

Imagine waking up to this.
Imagine waking up to this.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but this is terrifying. Why am I doing this...

3. AAAHH!!! Real Monsters

I never really gave this show a fair shot when I was little. The animation was enough to scare me away. The animations and textures of the characters really disturb me and make me want to look away. There's not really that much to it. The show ran from 1994 to 1997 and I wasn't sad when it ended. It was just one of those shows that got under my skin based on looks alone. IMDB actually has this rated as a 7.4 out of 10 which implies positive reviews mostly across the board, so it may even be worth revisiting just to see exactly what I was missing, but I'm not going to do that because ew, gross. Here's the trailer that always sent me running to the next room:

2. Ren & Stimpy

Of course we had to get to this one eventually right? Some would say that Ren & Stimpy was not actually a kids show, and anyone who has ever actually watched a full episode already knows this, but it was promoted as such and had a pretty successful run in its heyday from 1991 to 1996. IMDB has it rated high again at 7.5 out of 10. This show is one of the most controversial TV shows of all time because of the content within as well as the audience that was watching. It was definitely a trend-setter and started things such as the "grotesque close-up", and here is an example:

Sexy, right? NO. It's terrifying. For a cartoon, I can't believe how long this show stayed running. It was critically praised which is a big reason why, but with the amount of innuendo and and violence, it's baffling how it stayed so successful with audiences. No doubt this is one of the most influential cartoons of all time, but it's just so hard to look at. I can appreciate good comedy, but the same way that it never gripped me as a child, I don't see the value in it even now. To each their own I guess. Here's a clip to show you what I'm talking about:

1. Courage The Cowardly Dog

Now this here is a show I can actually appreciate now. When I was little it used to scare the hell out of me as it hit most of my sweet spots for things that terrify me. IMDB has this show rated the highest out of the ones I've listed rating it a 8.3 out of 10, and deservedly so. This show is a great blend of creepiness, comedy, horror, and satire. The (sort of) pilot of the show was actually a short film that was nominated for an Academy Award in 1995. Here's just a taste of the creepiness that was included in this award winning show:

It's only about 30 seconds long but it's enough to let you know the tone of this show and what it brings to the table. It's eerie, disturbing, frightening, unsettling, funny, sweet, and so much more rolled into one kids show. It's brilliant.

So that's my list! Did you love or hate these shows when you were young? Did I miss any shows that you thought were worthy of this list? Let me know in the comment section below!
