Video games have brought us much laughter and many tears throughout the years. Whether it's character development, or storyline, or dialogue, there are always some elements that tend to stick with us. With that in mind, I've decided to run down my top 10 memorable quotes from video games, and it was a difficult choice:
1.) Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)
"A man chooses, a slave obeys." These words are uttered by a character named Andrew Ryan, and Ryan's main philosophy is one of choice. Throughout the game the main character Jack is given many choices, both tactically and morally, but in the end we learn that his actions actually served no purpose at all.
Eventually, we find out that the mysterious Atlas was actually Frank Fontaine, who could basically control Jack by using the phrase, "Would you kindly." I remember this quote metaphorically destroying me as your own father asks you to kill him. Jack, having no choice, completes the action, defining himself as a slave.
2.) Mordin Solus (Mass Effect 3)
As you save the krograns from genocide, your trusted ally and friend Solus takes on the ultimate suicide mission. And as he heads up the elevator to his untimely death, his words "had to be me, someone else might have gotten it wrong", echo in your head.
Throughout the the second game, Mordin is constantly defending his people's choice for the genophage, and now he is willing to sacrifice his life in order to save an entire race, which really goes to show how much he grew as a character. I was completely speechless at this point of the game.
3.) Flemeth (Dragon Age 2)
“We stand upon the precipice of change. The world fears the inevitable plummet into the abyss. Watch for that moment...and when it comes, do not hesitate to leap. It is only when you fall that you learn whether you can fly.”
These words were said by the Witch of the Wilds, Flemeth, a living legend said to be the mother of justice. As she gives her brief yet stunning monologue, she is actually foreshadowing the future of the game. When the quote is summed up. it basically points to us living in a world that keeps changing, and with change comes fear.
And for those who are lucky, they have the chance to take this fear and run with it. Like, for example, the suppression of the mages and, with that constant drama, the inevitable rebellion that brought about a drastic change.
4.) GLaDOS (Portal 2)
After going through countless tests and a few attempted escapes, you finally near the end of the game. And once there, the infamous GLaDOS, with one of the most important quotes in gaming history, gives you her final words: "the best solution to a problem is usually the easiest one...". Chilling.
5.) Paarthurnax (Skyrim)
Here we have the final, and probably most meaningful quote from any video game. "What is better - to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?"
Life-changing isn't it? You begin to question what is really important: to be good from birth, or to overcome your own evils and then become a good person.
With the video game industry still on the rise, there are bound to be even more amazing quotes throughout the years to come, a reason why I have subtitles on almost all the time!
