This Is Madness has returned! It's March, which means StarWars.com is holding its annual Star Wars character tournament. Starting on March 14th, the contest features a new match-up each day resulting in a winner on April 5th. Past winners include fan favorite characters Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Vader. They are the most well known characters which gives them the largest fan-bases. Though we all love Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Vader, there are an overabundance of AMAZING characters who aren't as well known, but definitely deserve our recognition!
The problem with This Is Madness is simply the match-ups. It's highly unlikely that Hera Syndulla will receive more votes than Luke Skywalker. Even though Hera is a great character with a deep meaningful story-line, she probably can't beat the Luke Skywalker, saviour of the galaxy. Here are 5 characters that probably won't win, but deserve our votes because they're great!
Poor Hux was paired against Boba Fett. I love Hux, but it's going to be very hard to beat out Boba Fett, considering his cult following and his enormous popularity, even despite his lack of screen-time. Hux was an amazing bad guy. He controlled a station with the power to destroy star-systems. Domhnall Gleeson's portrayal of Hux during his speech against the Republic sent chills down our backs. He's Admiral Tarkin minus any anger management skills. He's brilliant! Thanks JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan for the amazing new villains!
Ahsoka was paired against new fan favorite BB-8. Though Ahsoka has stolen our hearts on both Star Wars TV offerings, BB-8 convinced the people of the world to shell out 150$ US each for a 3 inch tall, remote controlled version of himself. If he can do that, who stands a chance at defeating him? Ahsoka escaped the Jedi genocide during order 66. She was a crucial figure in the creation of the Rebellion. We watched her grow from a headstrong preteen to a wise and inspirational Jedi. She's endured the loss of her friends, her way of life, and her jedi master, isn't it about time something went Ahsoka's way?!
As I said earlier, Hera's been paired against Luke Skywalker. This is sad because her story on Star Wars: Rebels has been one of the best. She's basically the mother of the Rebels team. She has her own squadron of Rebel star fighters. She's even the daughter of legendary Clone Wars freedom fighter Cham Syndulla. Hera is an amazing pilot and a kind, loving leader. She's one of the best characters on Rebels, and she definitely deserves some credit.
Asajj may have the best chances of all of these. She's going up against Emperor Palpatine. Palpatine is a great villain, but he spends most of his time being overshadowed by Darth Vader. Asajj was one of the main villains of the Clone Wars TV series. After being betrayed by her master, Asajj turns to bounty hunting to put food on the table. She even assists Ahsoka when she's been accused of terrorism and murder. Asajj has a very interesting and very Star Wars-ey arc. Her story even inspired a book, which details her tragic final attempt to defeat her betrayer. Asajj achieved emotional depth that very few animated characters have achieved. She no doubt deserves our respect and our votes.
Padme is the perfect example of why not to trust young love. She fell in love with a sweet little 9 year old, who turned into a homicidal maniac. He "killed... younglings" after all. Even though she's a major character of the prequel era, she's going against a character who's had at least a minor role in every film and series in the franchise, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Despite her probable loss, Padme is a credible and important character. Especially after her appearances in the Clone Wars, we see that she is a strong, willful, opinionated female character just like her daughter Leia.
I love This Is Madness. It's a great chance for Star Wars fans to get competitive over the characters they love. If you haven't yet participated in the contest, I strongly urge you to go check it out! This Is Madness begins March 14th on StarWars.com. Who's your favorite Star Wars character? Are they included in this year's This Is Madness match-ups? Tell us in the comments! Hopefully the probabilaty of them winning is higher that 7320 to 1!
