1. His Middle Name Is Wilhelm
Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio. That's pretty regal.
2. Starring... 'Lenny Williams'
In an interview with Shortlist in 2010, DiCaprio revealed that when he was just 11, an agent told him his name was 'too ethnic' and he wouldn't work with him unless he changed it to 'Lenny Williams.' Two years later, the young actor found an agent to accept him with his own name.
3. He Speaks German
Leo's mom is German, and his dad is half German, half Italian.
4. He Almost Died Skydiving
In an interview with Esquire magazine, he revealed,
"I'm happy to be alive. I went skydiving and my chutes didn't open. Twice."
(You would think it would have turned him off skydiving after the first time.)
5. He Saw River Phoenix The Night He Died
DiCaprio shared this heartbreaking anecdote with Esquire,
When I was eighteen, River Phoenix was far and away my hero. Think of all those early great performances - My Own Private Idaho (1991). Stand by Me (1986). I always wanted to meet him. One night, I was at this Halloween party, and he passed me. He was beyond pale - he looked white. Before I got a chance to say hello, he was gone, driving off to the Viper Room, where he fell over and died.
6. He's An Axe-Throwing Ace
He won $20 off the other guys on the set of The Revenant when he schooled them in an axe-throwing contest. The star is modest about his natural affinity for woodsman sports in an interview with Mens Journal:
"I had a head start. I did a little bit of that on Gangs of New York. The key is getting the right distance from the log — it's gotta be like clockwork."
7. And That Liver He Ate? It Was Real.
In the same Mens Journal article, director Alejandro G. Iñárritu says,
"They had the prop man bring in a real cow's liver to show him the difference. And Leo said, 'Well, let's just use this one.'"
8. The Winslet's Kids' Love "Uncle Leo"
Mia Winslet and her mom, Kate, were walking by a newsstand when Mia spotted "Uncle Leo" on a newspaper cover. According to Contact Music, Mia said, "Mum, it's Leo, he's on the cover of the newspaper! We should really keep this and send it to him, mummy."
9. 'Hocus Pocus' Was His Back-Up Plan
DiCaprio revealed to EW, back in the early '90s, he got offered a part in Hocus Pocus for a lot of money. He said to himself, "Okay, I'll audition for this movie Gilbert Grape. If I don't get that, I'll do Hocus Pocus."
