"And now we play the waiting game to see how long it is before Konami puts the kibosh on the whole thing. Place your bets... now." This line was written on January 18 by Kotaku writer Ian Dransfield for an article about the Metal Gear Solid fan remake. The article was referencing the newly released trailer from the Shadow Moses project, which aimed to bring back the original MGS in brilliant Unreal Engine 4 form.
When the trailer was first released, fans all over the world were captivated by the stunning visual effects on display. I mean, imagine playing one of the greatest games of all time in Unreal Engine 4! Well, this dream was short-lived.
Has Konami Cancelled The 'Metal Gear Solid' Fan Remake?
This remake was to be the work of one Airam Hernández, a Canary Islands native now living in Dublin (my home :D). You can check out more of his progress over on the Shadow Moses Facebook page. Or, at least, you could:
We have an important announcement to make today:
We have to cancel the Shadow Moses Project for reasons beyond our control.
We would like to thank everyone for the tremendous support we have received.
Shadow Moses team.
This was published on March 4 and the Shadow Moses team sadly failed to offer any reason for this unfortunate development.
However, where the development team failed to offer an answer, there were plenty of gamers who attempted to supply the same narrative:
- Jason — "Bloody hell I knew KONAMI would do this."
- Robert — "I wonder why :P #FuckKonami"
- Derrick — "So, basically, a cease and desist."
- Joey — "Konami really doesn't care about the gaming community."
- Alice — "This had to be Konami's fault.."
- Tim — "Shouldn't have announced it until it was done, Konami never lets fans be happy."
This is barely even the surface of the comments that swiftly followed the announcement. Fans were understandably upset and, after all of the things that happened with Kojima, Konami and[Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain](tag:2683985) last year, it seemed that a cease and desist notice was to be expected. This hasn't been confirmed, though perhaps Konami is working on its own remake of Metal Gear Solid. This is only speculation for now.
While this seems to simply be a shower of bad news, Shadow Moses did have this to say the following day:
We do have some other news coming though.
So stay tuned!
We sincerely hope there is some light at the end of this tunnel for the people that invested so much time in this painstaking and beautiful remake of Metal Gear Solid. For now, all we can muster is, Snake? Snake?! SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
