“The Man in Black Fled Across the Desert, and the Gunslinger Followed.” And that is exactly what happened. We had The Man in Black announced as Matthew McConaughey and who followed after? The Gunslinger, Roland Deschain as Idris Elba.
I fully support the choices! I don't think Matthew McConaughey has played a villain before, so this will be fun and interesting to see. I think the closest villain he played... well I think he would be more of a difficult anti-hero, was his role in Reign of Fire. Which is a cool movie by the way, if you get a chance to watch it.
Now with Roland Deschain's character, he has come a long way! When King was creating this character, he based him on Clint Eastwood's characters from the western films. Eastwood obviously can't do it now because he's too busy making great inspirational films that I'm sure we'll look back on as classics!
Now we have Idris Elba taking The Gunslinger role, but he wasn't the first one to try out or even be asked to be Roland Deschain.
When it was first announced that the movie was in production, we were going to have Javier Bardem be The Gunslinger. I though that he was great in No Country for Old Men, and would've loved to see him as The Gunslinger.
Then we were going to have Russel Crowe dawn the part, but despite his western roles in 3:10 to Yuma and The Quick and the Dead, he was not able to take on the character Roland Deschain.
When it was finally confirmed that Idris Elba was going to play The Gunslinger, I was excited! I enjoyed his acting in the Thor movies as Heimdall!
With this take of Roland, it kind of reminds of Django Unchained. Which is one of my favorite Quentin Tarantino movies!
If you have noticed, all the actors that were about to play Roland bore a unique complexion when compared to Elba. And it made me think about this Tweet that J. K. Rowling stated about Hermione Granger's physical appearance:
Now, I am of European decent. What has happened in the past has passed and the future is now! To me, the future is looking bright with the choice for Idris Elba in playing The Gunslinger. Looking back on the actors who could have played Roland, I don't think that they would've done the role justly.
Elba is a perfect choice! Roland is a complex character from another world dealing with foes from other worlds and parallel universes. Elba has established that he can play that type of character in the Thor movies, Prometheus and Pacific Rim. I'm excited to see him bring one of my favorite book characters to life on the big screen!
Recently it has been rumored that Mad Max: Fury Road's Abbey Lee will be playing Tirana. Which makes me wonder who's next to be added into the cast for The Dark Tower movie?
Aaron Paul- He was great playing a drug addict in Breaking Bad! It would make sense that he would be a great choice to take on the role of Eddie Dean.
Joe Anderson- He also played a believable drug addict in the movie Horns! Which was based on the book with the same name by Joe Hill, who is Stephen King's son!
Zoe Saldana- She did a great job in portraying Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy! So why not cast her into the role for Susannah?
-Oy the Billy-Bumbler-
Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vin Diesel could do the voice for Oy. I mean He did the voice for Groot in said movie and all he said was "I am Groot" and "We are Groot". So limited usage of the English language should be a walk in the park for Vin!
Andy Serkis- Another talented voice actor that has done iconic voices like Gollum, Caesar and recently Snoke. Why not be part of another franchise that will help him go far in his career?
Now this character is a bit difficult for the big screen. Because Jake is a young boy throughout The Dark Tower series. It would be hard to film all 7-8 movies of The Dark Tower books and make sure that the young boy who was picked in this movie to not age drastically or get a sudden growth spurt.
There are a number of ways to do this:
1- Film all 7-8 movies at the same time just like what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings Trilogy so that the movies would fit perfectly with the timeline.
2- Have two movies come out the same year like what was done for the Matrix sequels. Again to fit with the timeline.
3- Make a CGI Jake. This has been done before. In Tron Legacy made a young Jeff Bridges in CGI form. In Polar Express and Mars Needs Moms they just took the actors and made young CGI versions of them and altered their voices to make them sound like a child.
4- Have parallel versions of Jake. Now hear me out, in The Dark Tower Series, as well as the whole Stephen King Universe, there are alternate versions of some of the characters in his books. In King's books they're called Twinners. They are basically doppelgangers.
So what could happen is if a young boy who played Jake suddenly changed drastically(like I mentioned before), then a similar looking Jake(who is around the same age), will take his place. They could even have Jake die in various ways and then come back as an alternate version of himself. So Jake could be like Kenny from South Park.
This is just my fan list for the characters that I think would be perfect for the roles and how it would pan out..
Let me know what you think? Do you agree with what I've got so far? What Dark Tower Fan Casting do you have?
