Welcome to Geekitude, the monthly newsletter of the most anticipated releases in the world of geeks from across the board. This includes movies, television shows and video games that geeks have marked on their calendars. With that said, the month of April is finally upon us and so are many interesting and anticipated blockbuster films, TV shows and video games. From time travel to flesh-eating zombies to old classics, let's go through some of the most awaited and exciting geek related releases of the next thirty-one days. Let's start with:
1. The Ranch
Release Date: April 1st
The Ranch not only makes Ashton Kutcher's triumphant return to television after the finale of Two and a Half Men, but also reunites Ashton with Danny Masterson for the first time since That '70s Show. The show follows an ex-semi pro football player, played by Kutcher, who returns home to run the family business with his brother after his sports career fails. The show also has some good talent in the cast including the classic Sam Elliot and Debra Winger and the beautiful Elisha Cuthbert who demonstrated her comedy chop in the short-lived Happy Endings.
Despite what you might think about Ashton Kutcher, the show does look like it can be an entertaining sitcom with a good supporting cast. I'd say it's well worth a viewing.
2. Quantum Break
Release Date: April 5th
Say what you will about Quantum Break, the game look absolutely breath-taking. The visuals are certainly something to get excited about. Starring Shawn Ashmore of X-Men fame, Quantum Break follows two main characters after a time travel experiment has gone wrong at a university. This causes all of time to start breaking down and even gives are our main characters special time powers.
Jack Joyce, played by Shawn Ashmore, has the power to stop time and Paul Serene, played by Aiden Gillen, has the power to see into the future. The game mixes deep story-telling, puzzle-platforming and third-person shooting. Set for a release on Microsoft Windows and Xbox One, this is one game that people should consider trying out.
3. Hardcore Henry
Release Date: April 8th
How can you not be super excited for this insane movie experience. Remember that FPS shooter scene from the Doom movie? You know, the only good part of the movie. Well, imagine a whole film about that with some insane action, visuals and actual good actors. Hardcore Henry follows a silent protagonist who is resurrected from death by his loving wife with no memory of his past life. Suddenly, an evil warlord kidnaps his wife and plans to wreak havoc on the world by bio-engineering soldiers.
The trailer is insane and shows off that the movie is going to offer plenty of over-the-top action. Any action movie or gaming junkie will get a kick out of this unbelievable cinematic experience... unless you get motion sickness really easily.
4. Fear the Walking Dead Season 2
Release Date: April 10th
Fear the Walking Dead was an original concept by franchise creator Robert Kirkman that depicted the events that led to the fall of the world and the Walking Dead that we already know. The first season surprised most fans as a lot did not expect it to be a good as it was. The idea of a Walking Dead spin-off and original story was sort of a strange concept but once again Robert Kirkman really immerses us into this crazy, depressing, violent world.
Everything pretty worked as Kim Dickens and Cliff Curtis were very well casted and it offered us some fascinating and pretty awesome moments. Let's hope they can keep it up for their second run.
5. Dark Souls 3
Release Date: April 12th
Its no secret that the first three Souls games are hard. Like really hard. Like 'crying in the corner with blood shooting out of your ears' hard. I doubt the developers are going to change that with this latest installment of the series. Not much is known about the plot of the game but the gameplay seems to very similar to the previous installments of the franchise.
The action is still as immersive as always as you have to stay on your toes to parry, shield and attack at the right moments or you're a shish-kebab. You can equip different types of weapons including shortbows, fire bombs, greatswords, and dual-wielding swords. Magic can also be used as a weapon but if you do that then you don't deserve to play Dark Souls you cheater. If you could beat the previous Souls games, first off kudos to you, then you should definitely check out Dark Souls 3
6. The Jungle Book
Release Date: April 15th
Ok, I have to admit that when I first heard about this film, I thought it was a complete joke. I mean c'mon, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Bill Murray as Baloo, and Christopher Walken as King Louie. It almost seemed unreal that this movie was happening... but then everyone saw the trailer and that reaction immediately changed.
The visuals are amazing and Scarlett Johansson seems like a strange choice but it also works. The size of the production shows and I think only the director of Iron Man could really portray that on the big screen. I'd tell you to go see it but something tells me you already have the date marked down in your calendar.
7. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 2
Release Date: April 15th
Tina Fey once again strikes gold on television with the newest hit on Netflix, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the story of a girl who has spent many years in a doomsday cult who finally rejoins society to start her life over again. Along the way, she is hired to be a nanny by Jacqueline Voorhees, played by 30 Rock cast member Jane Krakowski. She also befriends an aspiring Broadway star, Titus Andromedon, played by newcomer Tituss Burgess.
The show immediately caught audiences' eyes and one of the most viewed TV shows on Netflix. Can they keep this going for a second season? Check it out for yourself on April 15th.
8. Ratchet & Clank
Release Date: April 29th
Could this be the one video game movie that actually works? Surprisingly this seems to be the year of video game movies. With this movie being released, Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, its very possible that at least one of them could be good. Yeah, it might be stacked against its favor but it seems that Ratchet & Clank is taking a step in the right direction. The animation looks like it came right out of the video game and we also get the star power of Paul Giamatti and John Goodman providing their voices.
Get ready guys. Prince of Persia might be dethroned as the best video game movie as of April 29th. Mark the date on your calendar.
