When Avengers: Age of Ultron came out, there were barely any Black Widow toys to be found. Remember one of the most iconic scenes of the movie, where Black Widow casually drops out of a flying plane while riding a Harley?
Let's just take a moment and reflect once more on the awesomeness of Black Widow in this scene:
Well, that scene was represented in a toy set, but Black Widow was shamelessly replaced by one of her male colleagues.
Black Widow Toys Finally Exist
With Marvel's latest installment Captain America: Civil War just around the corner, toy makers probably felt that it was time to make some changes to the gender-biased offer usually filling kids' toys shelves. This time, Hasbro, Mattel, and LEGO made a point of including Scarlett Johansson's character in their toy lines.
Hasbro will be offering 3.75 inch and 12 inch action figures of the fierce Avenger, and has included her in a pack with the Hulk and Ultron as well as in the Super Hero Adventures Figure 2-Pack.
Mattel is dedicating her a Hot Wheels car, while LEGO will be producing a Crossbones Hazard Heist set including her motorcycle. There will also POP and Dorbz figurines from Funko, and even a styled Mrs. Potato Head. In terms of clothing, Her Universe imagined a Black Widow-themed fitness clothing line.
Looks like no one wanted to anger The Hulk this time.
Yes, Black Widow Sells
Although there is little sign of Scarlet Witch, it's a crucial step forward to finally acknowledge one of the franchise's main characters. The next step would be to finally get rid of that overall perception that boys only like characters with testicles and girls can't imagine other games than being the princess in the tower. You know, the perception that led to these kinds of t-shirts being made.
