Now that Leo has finally won his Oscar, the memes can finally be put to rest. But now that the joking is over, there are plenty of quality actors who have yet to receive an Academy Award. Which actor will get a meme now? Four of these actors could very well be next on the list.
4. Edward Norton
Edward Norton might be a pain to work with, but the quality of his acting seems to be worth it. Norton has been nominated for three Oscars so far and always seems to give it his all. He played the archaic white supremacist in American History X and the diva actor in Birdman (which some say is a caricature of himself). From those two films alone, it shows how much range he has and how far he’s willing to go for the role.
- 1997- Best Actor in a Supporting Role- Primal Fear
- 1999- Best Actor in a Leading Role- American History X
- 2015- Best Actor in a Supporting Role- Birdman
3. Johnny Depp
Sure, Johnny Depp may have had some flops lately, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t act. Even though he’s mostly known for the drunken Captain Jack Sparrow, we’ve seen that he can also pull off serious roles as well. If we go back in time, we can remember What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and even Finding Neverland in which he blew us away. Last year, he pulled off Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, which shows that he still has the chops in him even if he’s producing flops (anyone remember Mortecai?). Perhaps that film will show the world that we can take him seriously once again.
- 2004- Best Actor in a Leading Role- Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
- 2005- Best Actor in a Leading Role- Finding Neverland
- 2008- Best Actor in a Leading Role: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
2. Joaquin Phoenix
While the Oscars aren’t really his cup of tea, Joaquin Phoenix is still overdue for an award. The three roles he was nominated for were so incredibly different that it’s hard to believe that he was in the films. He’s gone from a gladiator to a lonely letter writer and everything in between. He’s extremely picky of the roles he chooses and has rejected offers from Marvel and Lucasfilm. He’s proven that he doesn’t need franchises to be great. The roles that he picks do the talking for him.
- 2001: Best Actor in a Supporting Role- Gladiator
- 2006- Best Actor in Leading Role- Walk the Line
- 2013- Best Actor in a Leading Role- The Master
If we can just forget about After Earth, then we’ll realize that this is Will Smith we’re talking about here. He has been a cultural icon for decades from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air to Independence Day. And while he is known as an action star, we can’t deny that he can pull off drama very well. His role as Chris Gardner in the film, Pursuit of Happiness, was heartbreaking yet inspiring and showed that he’s not just Mike Lowry from Bad Boys. While he did get snubbed for his role in Concussion, he still has plenty of opportunities to find the perfect role. Heck, maybe even his son will get one before he does.
- 2002: Best Actor in a Leading Role- Ali
- 2007- Best Actor in a Leading Role- The Pursuit of Happiness
As you can see, the fight doesn't end at Leo's oscar. There are plenty of actors and actresses we love that still haven't received the Academy Award they deserve, which leads me to my final question...
