50. That's a nice round number. 50 States in the U.S., Super Bowl 50 took place earlier this year, 50th anniversary of Star Trek is this year, 50 Cent... you get the picture. Now, 50 movies based on comic book properties are slated for the next four years. 50, an average of 12.5 comic movies a year until 2020! That's not even counting the six possible ones with no date attached yet. I believe that we are in danger of comic book movie overload.

Way back in the 90s we were lucky if we got one comic movie a year. Then with the success of X-Men, Blade 2, and Spider-Man we began our journey to where we are now. Marvel was the top dog in comic movies for a long time with DC delivering so-so films. Now DC is playing catch up along with Dark Horse, Image, and Valiant, pushing the comic movie slate to capacity. This is not including regular movie releases either. Tastes ebb and flow in Hollywood and we get genres that are hot for a bit then fade out. Take the sci-fi craze in the 80s and the teen scene in the 90s for example. But for now let's take a look at what's coming down the pipeline starting with the rest of this year.

That's where we stand so far. This is fluid so we may lose some or gain some films as we move forward. We already lost the Gambit solo film and there's rumors of films for Preacher, Fear Agent, X-O Manowar, Archie, The Goon, Hellboy 3, Danger Girl, Fathom, Hack/Slash and Invincible. Whether we see those or get some not even on our radar remains to be seen. Either way we're in for a glut of comic book movies with no end in sight.
