The traditional superhero team is so OVERRATED. Movie-goers have shown through ticket sales that they do love to see the Avengers fight to save the world, while simultaneously bickering more than a gaggle of housewives. But audiences want a change, and in 2016 we're going to get it. Suicide Squad hits theaters in August in 2016, and DC Comics' most infamous group of antiheroes are going to get the chance to save the day. This is a small part in a series of articles breaking down the members of the Task Force X and what role they'll play in the SKWAD. This piece focuses on a lesser known member of the Suicide Squad with a lot of spark.
Name: Chanto Santana
Alter-Ego: El Diablo
Chanto Santana grew into a gang leader, who did use muscle to fight their way to being feared by all. Despite their strength, Santana's gang did believe in moral justice and would only retaliate against those that deserved it. Chanto's life changed when he and his gang were shot and captured by the police.
- Leadership: Before inheriting the title of "El Diablo", Chanto had experience as a leader of his crime gang. Although he is surrounded in the Suicide Squad with larger and louder personalities, El Diablo has learned how to use others to get what he wants.
- Pyrokinesis: The ability to create and wield fire wasn't something that he was born with, but it was something that was given to him. Lazarus Lane was a western hero in DC Comics who was struck by lightening and developed the ability to form flames from thin air. When Lane discovered and used his powers, he was the first character in the DC Universe to have the name, El Diablo. The night that Santana was shot by the police, he was brought into the hospital, where he passed a comatose and dying Lazarus Lane. Lane felt Satana's presence and realized that he was a worthy heir to his powers. So in his dying moments he transferred his powers to Chanto without his knowledge. From there, El Diablo was reignited for a new generation.
- Personal Guilt: The first time that Chanto harnessed the power of El Diablo, he decided to use his powers to evoke revenge against an ex-mobster. El Diablo decided to burn him alive at his apartment, but lost control of the flames and ended up burning down the entire building, killing every man, woman, and child, inside. El Diablo felt guilty for the death of everyone in the building, and turned himself into the police for the arson and murder, which put him on Amanda Waller's radar for Task Force X.
Anti-heroes are the new heroes! After the heroes fail to save the day, then it's going to be up to the villains and wrong-doers to stop the world from plunging to the chaos. And if the Suicide Squad can't stop evil, no one can.
