It is official, bye bye Boy Wonder! While Ben Affleck hasn't exactly been forthcoming with details on his Batman outing, he has just dropped a massive spoiler – there will be no Robin in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The Oscar winner spoke to Entertainment Weekly and answered one very key question on where his loyal sidekick is:

He’s bitterly disappointed in the past that he’s lost this guy who fought by his side. That character’s death must have been devastating to him, and he’s suffered. We get the sense that he’s suffered a lot of devastating losses before this movie even starts.

So does this finally explain that "Joke's on you Batman" that we all saw scrawled on a Robin suit in the trailer? Rumors had circled that we would see a Robin in BvS, even that actress Jena Malone would be playing the female, Carrie Kelley, incarnation of Robin. Kelley is the Robin from Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, from which director Zack Snyder admits he has taken a lot of inspiration. Malone's red hair fit the role, but it was then announced that she would be playing Barbara Gordon in the movie.

The confirmation that a 'Robin' has died could now point to the Jason Todd/'Death in the Family' saga. In one of DC's most well known Batman tales, a maniac Joker kidnaps those closest to Batman in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Ultimately Bruce can't save everyone and Jason Todd is killed (for a while) in a warehouse explosion.

While details of Affleck's portrayal of Bruce Wayne still remain sketchy, it looks like we are moving away from the Christopher Nolan trilogy and to an older Bruce:

What I wanted was to create a Batman that was sort of at the end of his rope physically and psychologically and emotionally, who was beaten down by the world, who was a little bit more of a slugger, who has more grey in his hair and who was questioning whether the whole journey that he lived as Batman was in fact even worth it.

Affleck has been notoriously silent about taking on the cowl. When announced as the Caped Crusader he did no interviews or appearances to discuss the character. Even at 2014's San Diego Comic-Con, Affleck appeared next to Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot with just a wave. Batfleck's wait-and-see approach certainly seems to be working by ramping up the hype, but it is tragic to learn he has already lost his Robin... R.I.P. Robin 1940-2016 'We hardly knew ye'

Would you liked to have seen Robin in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice'?
