Digimon Adventures Tri. - Determination, marks the second of a series of six movies being released for the 15th anniversary of Digimon Adventures. This movie has confirmed many aspects of the movies and has given fans just as many new questions in return. This review will break down some key aspects of the film along with a few treats that made to movie perfect for any Digimon fan. For an article breaking down the trailers for this movie please feel free to check it out through the following link: Trailer Breakdown for Digimon Adventure Tri: Determination.

First off this movie has confirmed for viewers that the first few movies will focus on a different pair of Digidestined for each movie. The first movie Digimon Adventures Tri. - Reunion, focused on the pair Taichi (Tai) and Yamato (Matt) which was to be expected given how they were the primary two in the first series of Digimon Adventures.

Digimon Adventures Tri. - Determination, focused heavily on Joe and Mimi. This was suggested as the pair featured in the promo image for Determination, much like Taichi and Yamato did in the promo image above. However keen Digimon fans will have noticed in the promo image for Determination were the Digimon Vikemon and Rosemon, getting many excited to the potential of Gomamon and Palmon finally receiving their mega level evolution. Well the good news for fans is they did and here is the moment they both first evolved!

With Palmon and Gomamon both digivolving to their mega levels it is highly likely Biyomon and Tentomon will be next in Digimon Adventures Tri. - Confusion, the next movie. However back to Determination. The movie added to the story set in motion in the first movie Reunion, with more attention on the mysterious new Digidestined and her partner Digimon.

Meiko and Meicoomon

We see Meiko clearly forming bonds with the other female Digidestined in this movie, and Meicoomon begins to integrate with the other partner Digimon. However there is no resolution as to why Alphamon was targeting the pair in the first movie. Even more interesting was the one targeting Meicoomon in Determination was none other than the Digimon Emperor, Ken. This was made clear during the trailer along with the appearance of Imerialdramon.

Digimon Emperor and Imperialdramon

As you saw in the video earlier, the threat from Imperialdramon was the force requiring Joe and Mimi to find the power to allow Gomamon and Palmon to digivolve to mega. However, the end of the movie suggests both could have simply been fake constructs that were not actually real. The Digimon Emperor simply vanishes at the end and above the battle is Hackmon with a point of light originating from its eye.

Hackmon at the end of the movie

This could be an indication they are following an aspect of Hackmon established through the computer games. Hackmon is put through vigorous training by Gankoomon to make him strong enough to become the 13th Royal Knight, Jesmon. If what appears to happen in the movie is correct, it could mean Hackmon is doing the same to the Digidestined. He is putting them tough trials to complete in order to make them stronger. This could further imply he is training them to become his army against the evil behind the series, as Jesmon is the only Royal Knight who enlists other Digimon to create armies to fight against evil. However that is pure speculation and will only be confirmed in time.

The movie did show one of the latest perils to the Digital World, Digimon are being infected by something that causes them to go into a mindless rage. This is why Ogremon is seen destroying Primary Village where all Digimon are born. We also know it can be passed on as Ogremon infected Leomon in his attempts to protect Primary Village. But what is the biggest question behind it all is the link the infected Digimon have to Meicoomon. It is stated towards the end that he is the one responsible for all the infected Digimon just after he kills Leomon and flees into a digital portal.

Leomon is not the luckiest Digimon around the Digidestined as he did die protecting Mimi in the first series, and a different Leomon died in Digimon Tamers who was partnered to the Digidestined Jeri. So it is no real shock Leomon died in Determination, as he is that Digimon normally there to sacrifice himself or be killed. But from the reactions of those around the moment Leomon died suggests one was actually pleased Meicoomon went rabid and killed him. Maki Himekawa. Maki has been a question mark fans have had asking since the first movie. Maki and Daigo were both introduced during the first movie.

Daigo and Maki
Daigo and Maki

Maki is part of some sort of agency with an invested interest in Digimon and she has a connection of some kind with Meiko. Daigo was first seen as a teacher at the school of Taichi, Yamato, Sora, Koushirou (Izzy) and Mimi with it being revealed he to is linked to the same organisation. The pair knew all about the Digidestined and were even the ones who gathered them when Kuwagamon attacked in the first movie. So why did Maki smile when Leomon died? Is she the one threatening the Digital World this time? Is she the one who created whatever is infect the Digimon? Has she done something to Meiko's Digivice? Only time will tell.

All-in-all the movie is well worth watching, it builds on the story started in the first movie while at the same time has a sub-story play out centered around Joe and Mimi. Confusion is set for release during the summer with promotional images and trailers due for release soon. It is highly likely we will see Sora, Koushirou, Pheonixmon and Herculeskabuterimon featured with the foe for the movie, emulating the first two promo images. Please stay tuned for all the latest info on Digimon Adventures Tri.
