In Harmony Falls 1958, Tommy Fuller and his girlfriend Betty get into an accident after racing with their friends. They crash into a ditch and find a blue meteorite. Savage appears and tells them that fate had brought them there. The Legends arrive at Oregon in 1958 to investigate a series of murders seemingly tied to Savage. Tension builds between Jax and Snart after the latter iced Mick. Stein and Sara infiltrate a mental institution as a doctor and nurse where Sara discovers that Savage is a doctor there under the name Curtis Knox. She also finds a potential love interest in Lindsay Carlisle, a fellow nurse. Ray and Kendra act as a married couple to investigate a murder in a small suburban area, but discover that Savage lives there as well. After finding a metal door at Savage's house during a soiree the Knox's are holding, Ray decides to return with his ATOM suit the next day. He sneaks in and finds the Anan dagger that Kendra needs to kill Savage and takes it. While on a date with Betty, Jax tries to obtain more information the disappearances of teens in the town, one of which was her boyfriend Tommy. They are then attacked by humanoid, bird-like creatures created by Savage from a similar Nth metal meteorite that gave Kendra and Carter their powers. While trying to get a wounded Betty to the ship, Jax is abducted by the local sheriff and delivered to Savage. The team saves Betty and decide to go after Savage at the hospital, where he has already infected Jax with the Nth metal and transformed him into one of the creatures. Despite Ray's disapproval, Kendra confronts Savage, but he almost kills her before Ray arrives ito rescue her. Snart, Stein and Sara manage to capture Jax after battling the creatures. Back at the ship, Stein and Gideon create a serum that cures Jax and the other victims. Jax reunites Betty with Tommy and says his goodbyes. Sara says her goodbyes to Lindsay and kisses her one last time. He then apologizes to Snart about his comments regarding Mick, realizing that Snart was only protecting the team. Chronos then arrives and storms the ship, which forces the Waverider to quickly leave, stranding Ray, Sara and Kendra in 1958.
This episode was like watching Pleasantville with laser guns. It's been a bit since our Legends fought with Savage and it was nice to see a new kind of enemy in this one. Check out these notable scenes.
Tommy Fuller: Betty's boyfriend, who Savage turned into a bird monster with the Nth metal meteorite.
Bud Ellison: The corrupt town sheriff who works with Savage in bringing in teens he can conduct experiments on.
Lindsay Carlisle: A nurse who works at the mental institution Savage runs and Sara's potential love interest. She is afraid to come as a lesbian until Sara comes to town.
Betty Seaver- Tommy's girlfriend, who Jax befriends after Tommy's disappearance. She was definitely more open minded than the rest of the people in Harmony Falls.
Gail Knox- We wouldn't have thought that Vandal would settle down with anyone since the whole reason for his madness is base on his obsession for Kendra. He had no problem forgetting he had a wife when Kendra came to town.
Legends- Everybody had different roles to play in this one and it was fun to see how they all fit into the 50s. There was definitely some tension between everyone after Snart "took care" of Mick, and we still have yet to find out what really happened to Mick. We lost a Legend last episode and then by the end of this, the team is again torn apart thanks to Chronos.
Ray and Kendra- We definitely didn't see these two becoming an item when this adventure began, but we are all for it. Even when Ray was right about Kendra not being ready to take on Savage, he apologized for not believing in her. Super protective and kindhearted Ray Palmer for you. Hopefully they go the distance, but it will definitely be awkward whenever Carter decides to show up again.
Stein and Snart- We love how Stein saw right through Snart's tough guy exterior. After Snart risked his life to save him and Jax at the mental institution he called him a hero. That's what he needed to hear after everything that went down with Mick.
Stein and Sara- Most of the comic relief came from these two this episode. He asked her to get him coffee and she threatened to kill him over a course days. It's just a good time when they are together. Aside from all the funny scenes they had together, Stein was also the one she went to with the problems in her love life. Stein the love doctor, nuclear physicist and psychiatrist at your service.
Stein and Jax- You would think that Jax would have learned to take care of himself by now, but Stein is still saving him. Not only did he have to go through bird monsters to get to him, but he also created a cure (i just a few short hours) for him and the rest of Savage's victims.
Sara and Lindsay- It's about time Sara got some! With all the flirting she was doing, we didn't think she would be the one who would walk away scared after their kiss. Now that Sara is stuck along with Ray and Kendra, it looks like we are going to be able to explore their relationship.
Rip and Snart- Partners in crime. Or in law enforcement actually. We needed this buddy cop story between the two of them. Snart was basically made for the 50s and Rip's accent was just hilarious. Snart didn't like being called Rip's partner and was only reminded of Mick. Poor guy.
Jax and Betty- They had some great chemistry, but the people in Harmony Falls were not as accepting of it. Jax is the only guy we've seen to like a girl enough to buy her a car, supe is up and then reunite her with her boyfriend.
Jax and Snart- Snart may have started out as a criminal, but he's shown that he wants to change. Going as far as to getting rid of his friend just to protect the team. Jax was the last one to figure this out and all the scenes leading up to that were pretty harsh. After finding out that Snart saved him instead of icing him when he was a homicidal bird man, he apologized and understood why he took out Mick.
Savage and Kendra- Savage never fails to be creepy whenever she's around. We even got to see the two kiss. Kendra should have known better not to confront someone who has always been 100 steps ahead of them. He got his kiss and nearly had her life force if it weren't for Ray.
Pleasantville Reference- Jax had referenced the movie when talking to Stein and Sara.
Dr. Curtis Knox- This is a Smallville reference. Dean Cain portrayed the character who was based off of Vandal Savage. The only difference was that Dean Cain's character was killing people to keep his wife alive, but both versions are crazy as hell.
Back to the Future Reference- Jax called one of the racist bullies who were bothering Betty Biff.
Hall H- One of the biggest rooms at San Diego Comic Con which was referenced as a section of the mental institution the Legends found Savage working in.
The One Who Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest- This episode seemed like an homage to the movie. Snart referenced Nurse Ratched and the scene with Ray, Rip and Sara towards then end with Ray acting as a mental patient was parallel to a scene in the movie.
1958- The movie Grease takes place in 1958. I guess Betty was Sandy and Tommy was Danny. Grease lightning. Go Grease lightning.
What's To Come/Theories:
Thanks to Boba Fett the team is once again separated. Chronos has forced the Waverider to leave with Snart, Rip, Stein, and Jax going along with him for the ride. That leaves Sara, Ray and Kendra stranded in 1958. From the preview we got we see that the trio has had to get used to being in 1958 and Ray says that they are in some sort of time loop, being in 1958, two years in a row. He is also seen teaching a class, while Kendra and Sara are off doing whatever it is you do in the 50s. Rip, Snart, Stein and Jax duke it out with Chronos and Snart is taken by him. He then proceeds to scream in pain for some reason. In regards to Mick, we didn't actually get to see what really happened to him. If we had to guess, he is still there where he and Snart had their little chat and has his legs frozen. What if Chronos or one of the Time Master found him and decide to use his anger towards the team to get to Rip? Could be a big possibility. We also saw Ra's Al Ghul back being his bad self. We saw Damien Darhk in the 70s so it will be interesting to see what Ra's is doing in the 50's. We don't think that Snart would kill his closest friend and is probably going to go back later for him once the mission is done. Hopefully we get to see what really went down between the two that night once the show returns.
We have to wait until the end of the month to find out what will happen to out Legends, but we were left with a pretty solid episode. For some reason we thought that the title had something to do with Carter's return, but it we couldn't have been more wrong. We love that they are changing up the threats every week and somehow tying them to Savage. This episode had action, comedy, horror, sci-fi and references galore. It also addressed topics such having to with LGBT and racism, which are still relevant now, without throwing it in our faces. We give this one 9.1 Waveriders out of 10. What did you think about "Night of the Hawk"? Leave it in the comments below, we'd love to read them! Also, congrats to our Legends for getting a Season 2!! Hell yeah, bring it on
