Video games can be emotional. It's hard for a lot of people to comprehend, gamers included, but there are several titles out there that are renowned for their emotional power. Director of Final Fantasy 15, Hajime Tabata, wants his latest creation to join that list. He laments the days when games rewarded you with an emotional conclusion, something that perfectly encapsulated the experience and hours shared with it.

In an interview with Game Informer, he stated that players deserved an emotional ending if they play Final Fantasy 15, and he's going to give it to them:

"I want to create a very emotional ending to the game and want to make as many people cry as possible," he said. "You're spending so many hours playing the game, so when I finish a game and it ends on a sour note and it doesn't move me, it gets me disappointed. At least make me cry or give me some emotion! I want to give a moving ending for the consumers who invest so much time."

Can Final Fantasy 15 Make Us Cry Like These Games Have?

It's a really sweet sentiment. I hope Final Fantasy 15 has what it takes to make us feel emotionally invested in its characters by the conclusion, but can it rival these games? Though I consider myself an emotional person, it takes a lot to make me cry in video games (less so with films). So here's my own personal list of moving video games and I sincerely hope you'll let us know what games moved you to tears in the comments below!

Note: All of these discussions have spoilers for the respective games.

Ni No Kuni

Right off the bat, this masterful JRPG tried to hit you right in the feels, and it succeeded several times throughout its lengthy campaign.

Studio Ghibli are renowned for their beautiful animation and emotional films. How can you not be moved by Chihiro and Haku holding on to one another as they fall through the sky in Spirited Away, or hold back the tears as Grave of the Fireflies absolutely breaks your heart? Ni No Kuni is the same.

The one moment that got me though, was when dear Oliver realizes that he has indeed lost his mother forever. He sought to save the other version of herself in Ni No Kuni, but sadly realized it wasn't possible. Remarkable story and definitely a moment that caught me.

Gears of War 3

Okay, this didn't make me cry, but I was genuinely shocked by how moved I was by this surprising moment in Gears of War 3. If you've played Gears of War before, you'll know that the series is no stranger to moving its players. There are so many sad moments that involve Dom and his wife Maria, but the moment that got me was his sacrifice in Gears of War 3, all of which is underscored by the song 'Mad World'.

So Many Final Fantasy Games

Whether it be the death of Aerith in Final Fantasy 7 or the death of Krile's grandfather in Final Fantasy V, the series is absolutely jam packed with emotional moments and tragic deaths. Final Fantasy 7 is probably the most memorable for us. It was shocking and very powerful. But what's the one moment that gets you?

To The Moon

For anyone who has played this spectacular video game, you'll know why I've included this game on my list. To The Moon has one of the most beautifully engaging stories in video games. It's innovative, packed full of great characters and has a pay off that is genuinely heartbreaking. The moment in which Johnny and River sit down with one another as kids and talk about the moon got me good. Genuine tears. We need more games like this people. We really do.
