After the success of the first two Spider-men films, Sony immediately green-light Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 4. Spider-Man 3 was a bomb with critics and fans but it did make 890.9 million US dollars in the box office. The reason why the film was not to the standards of the previous 2 films was that Sam Raimi wanted to make the main and only villain Sand-Man but Sony forced him to include Venom due to the fan's asking for him to appear in the film. Sam Raimi was unhappy with the studio forcing him to include Venom so he purposely rushed the script and it ended up in a mess with three villains instead of one like Raimi wanted.

Pre-production started on Spider-Man 4 in 2008 with the cast set to return and Sam Raimi writing and directing. It was set to come out the same day as 2011's Thor on the 28th of April which would have been approximately 3 years since the last film. Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst would be reprising their roles as Mary-Jane Watson and Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Dylan Baker was also supposed to come back in this film. In Spider-Man 2 and 3 he played Dr Curt Connors otherwise known in the comics as The Lizard. Sam Raimi had in fact planned for Dylan Baker to transform into The Lizard. Sadly once the film was cancelled it meant that Dylan Baker would never be able to play the role. The Lizard was used in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and he was eventually played by Rhys Ifans.

Like in Spider-Man 3 this film was going to have several villains. Sony wanted The Vulture to be an antagonist. John Malkovich was cast in the role and according to him, he was very excited to play Spider-Man's most dangerous winged villain. This is what John Malkovich has to say about why the movie may fell about:

“Well, I think a lot of the people who sort of follow that genre… I’m not sure, I never really spoke with Sam about this, but I’m not sure they — maybe the kind of fanbase, the fanboys — either didn’t approve of that character as an adversary for him to some extent…or maybe the studio. Or maybe that was totally unrelated to why it fell apart.”

Anne Hathaway also was a confirmed cast member at this point. She was set to play Felicia Hardy who is otherwise known as Black Cat. Coincidentally Anne Hathaway played Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. Black Cat was inspired by Catwoman in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 which came out in 1979. There was only twist to the Felicia Hardy origin story, she wasn't going to be Black Cat but in fact, Felicia Hardy would be The Vultress. The Vultress is normally represented as The Vulture's companion and side-kick. Sam Raimi has said that he was not impressed that she got to play Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises since her auditions where so good.

The Lizard, Vulture, and Vultress where the only official villains that were supposed to appear in the film but there are strong rumors that suggest that Carnage was supposed to make an appearance. Carnage is Venom's child who is attached to Cletus Cassidy, a serial killer. In the comic books, Carnage is completely crazy and is known to be extremely violent. There was no one cast in the role but there are other rumors that suggest Jim Carrey was supposed to play the role. It is not confirmed if this was going to be a large role or a post-credit sequence.

Another role that was confirmed by Sam Raimi was Bruce Campbell. Bruce Campbell had cameos in every Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie since Sam Raimi's career started with Bruce Campbell in the low-budget "Evil Dead". In Spider-Man 1, he played an announcer at a boxing arena where he gives Spider-Man his name, in Spider-Man 2 he played a Major de at a Broadway show and in Spider-Man 3 he played a Waiter that is trying to help Peter Parker ask Mary-Jane to marry him. We do not know what role he would play but Sam Raimi has stated that he would finally play a main character.

The plot to Spider-Man 4 is not known yet except for the villains that would appear. 4 drafts to the film where written but the internet is littered with fake scripts for Spider-Man 4 which makes it hard to find the original and learn what the plot is.
