Gematsu has caught wind of a rumor that suggests Square Enix is planning to launch the next epic chapter in their legendary RPG franchise on September 30, 2016.

The source, which Gematsu describes as "reliable," says this date will be officially announced during Square Enix's event 'Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV,' held in Los Angeles on March 30. If the source is correct, Final Fantasy XV will release worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One exactly six months later.

First announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, this game began life on the PS3 back in 2006. Seven years later, at E3 2013, the title was re-announced as Final Fantasy XV, better resembling the monster-ridden road trip we see today.

Any main line Final Fantasy game is big news, but this one's been such a long time coming that the excitement surrounding it is palpable. Here's hoping we will indeed get our hands on it later this year.
