When we last left our old friend Indy, it was in the polarizing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It featured Harrison Ford reprising his role in an action-packed adventure filled with thrills, spills, and fridge nukes. Some felt it was an epic return to the franchise while others were disappointed by its emphasis on CG (among other things). To this day, many fans are still holding out for Indiana Jones to make a proper return to theaters. In this case, the wait may finally be over.
Disney chairman Alan Horn said the following in an official announcement today:
"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
So not only is Harrison Ford set to make a comeback, but Steven Spielberg will be returning as well. However, it's not known if Spielberg will direct or produce the film. Nobody knows if Shia LaBeouf will return either, but that seems highly unlikely.
The new installment in the franchise will mark the first time in 12 years that Indiana Jones has graced theaters. After Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, many fans were concerned that the franchise would end on a bad note. On the contrary, if The Force Awakens can overcome the prequel films, then so can this new Indiana Jones adventure.
Indiana Jones 5 is set for release on July 19, 2019, which is just a couple of months after Star Wars: Episode IX comes out. Needless to say, Lucasfilm is pretty much set to dominate the summer movie season that year.
