When Disney bought LucasFilm back in 2012 for $4.2 billion dollars, they were not going to buy the popular Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises just for merchandise as both of the franchises had been finished at that point. It was shortly after when Disney announced that there was a seventh Star Wars film in the making. That film was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was only released months ago. That shows how much time it has been since the purchase. Disney has hinted at another Indiana Jones film for years now and it seems to be they have finally came out with a statement.
Disney Announces New Indiana Jones for 2019 Release with Spielberg Directing and Harrison Ford to Star
It has finally been announced: the fifth Indiana Jones film has been announced. Steven Spielberg will return to his beloved franchise to direct once more. What is more of a surprise, Harrison Ford is back to star as Indiana Jones himself. As he has definitely aged and his attitude towards Hollywood as a whole has changed, it was unclear whether or not he would play the titular role once more. Many fans speculated Disney would reboot the franchise and cast someone younger, such as Chris Pratt. Kathleen Kennedy, who is Lucasfilm's president, and Frank Marshall will produce.
The next film in the Indiana Jones franchise is set to release in theaters on July 19, 2019, more than 3 years away. Personally, I find this a bit odd as I would assume they would already be in production as Disney has hit us fans over the heads with hints. This means that Disney has just began production. They probably knew they were going to move forward with the franchise but wanted to get the Star Wars franchise started. Lucasfilm has come out with the following statement:
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios in a press release. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
As this very good news, it makes me a bit skeptical. The franchise didn't exactly end on the highest note with the fourth movie and hopefully the fifth one will put the franchise back in the right direction. LucasFilm was able to recover Star Wars from the disliked prequels, hopefully they can do the same with Indiana Jones. However, Star Wars is the most beloved movie franchise out there (I can easily say that) and Indiana Jones, while it popular, will be harder to restart. Indiana Jones also has a classic tone to its movies and will be difficult to reproduce with movies in 2016.
