Supergirl got over its recent slump in S01E16, with one of the best episodes yet. "Falling" showed us a Kara exposed to Red Kryptonite, which as everyone knows brings out the passionate, compulsive, and kinda jerky side of Kryptonians. Oh, and they tend to wear a lot of black.

In episode 16, Kara finally got out of her shell, spitting harsh truths left and right, alienating friends and family alike. It was refreshing to see her take on Siobhan at her own Devil Wears Prada game, but the scenes between Red K high-Kara and Alex rank among the show's most heart-wrenching moments.

Red K Kara also threw a spanner in the works as far as her relationship with James is concerned; while last episode saw James realize he had feelings for Kara, her actions in "Falling" definitely set their inevitable get-together back a few paces. (Anyone else tired of the will-they-won't-they dance?)

Overall this was a fantastic episode with many long lasting consequences, not the least of which being J'onn J'onzz revealed and incarcerated by the DEO. Uncovering his history will be the focus of episode 17, but before we get to that let's recap how "Falling" sets up the Supergirl/Flash crossover!

Siobhan's Villainous Origins

One of the key components of the upcoming Supergirl/Flash team-up episode is another team-up, between Silver Banshee (Siobhan's villainous alter ego) and Livewire. Last week we wondered whether this team-up meant that Siobhan would have something in common with Livewire, a former jilted employee of CatCo.

And now we know the connection: spurred on by Red K, Kara exposed Siobhan's journalistic espionage to Cat Grant, who was not impressed, and promptly fired her. So it turns out Kara didn't have to throw Siobhan into space, after all. Shame.

How Livewire comes back into the picture, and what that has to do with Barry Allen's entrance into Kara's reality remains to be seen. Will we finally see Siobhan transform into Silver Banshee next episode? It's certainly possible, though episode 17 will mainly focus on J'onn J'onzz.

Rise Of The Martian Manhunter

Now that he's been revealed to the world as an alien, J'onn J'onzz will be forced to explain his arrival on Earth in S01E17, and how he took up the identity of Hank Henshaw.

This flashback story will also feature the return of Dean Cain as Jeremiah Danvers, Kara and Alex's father. It's possible that with his origin story revealed, J'onn J'onzz will finally be able to serve the DEO fully, as the superhero Martian Manhunter. This would be a great benefit to both the DEO and Kara, as his superior strength and flight could provide Supergirl with much needed backup. Martian Manhunter's presence on the show could also be the start of something even greater.

In the comics, the Martian Manhunter was one of the members of the Justice League, which comprised of Superman, the Flash, Wonder Woman, and many others.

Shows such as Smallville have featured their own, smaller versions of the super-friends before, and it's possible that with Kara's imminent team-up with Flash, and the Legion ring hint from last episode, Supergirl could be building up to a wider universe.

DC & Pop Culture References

She might not have been drunk, but Red K Kara did reference drunk Superman in Superman 3, terrorizing bar patrons by flicking peanuts at bullet-speed.

This might be one of the show's best references yet; Kara even tipped the peanut bowl up in the same way — but she didn't melt the mirror.

Also, never one to shy away from fourth-wall breaking comments, Cat Grant referred to Winn as her "computer droid." That was a neat little nod to Star Wars, considering actress Calista Flockheart is married to Harrison Ford.

Tune In Next Week

All in all, S01E16 "Falling" was a fantastic episode, setting up plenty of story threads to be resolved later. Episode 17, Manhunter, will examine the consequences of Kara's bad girl antics, as the preview shows.

As Lord knows how to create Red Kryptonite, it's possible we haven't seen the last of Red K Kara yet. So what did you think of Episode 16? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
