The musical episode has been a stable of television since the beginning. Shows like Glee and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend might put on, or did, a show every week, but most shows wait a few seasons before they do it. And some of them are great. Some are bad. Or in the middle. Or even just bizarre. And some are very memorable, just like the following.
I Love Lucy- Lucy Goes To Scotland
I Love Lucy is a classic television show with a lot of classic moments. One of those moments is an episode with a singing dragon. In season 3, episode 7, Lucy dreams about going to Scotland, and it is everything you think it would be.
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer- Once More With Feeling
Considered one of the shows greatest episodes, Once More With Feeling featured a demon making Buffy and the gang sing about their secrets. Joss Whedon, the show's creator and all-around king of geek culture, wrote the episode and all the songs and directed the episode. Featuring songs such as I'll Never Tell, Under Your Spell, and Something To Sing About, the episode grew a cult following and is considered one of the best musical episodes ever.
Scrubs- My Musical
Scrubs was a medical comedy. So, when they wanted to do a musical episode, they figured having a patient hear everything as a song was the perfect excuse. It was so well received, the episode was nominated for five Emmy Awards.
Community- Regional Holiday Music
When a episode of a show is both a Christmas episode and a parody of Glee, you know you have a hit on your hand. The season three saw it's characters join a glee club and singing a bunch of original songs.
Batman: The Brave And The Bold- Mayhem of the Music Meister
Even cartoons can get into the musical feeling. Having Neil Patrick Harris voice a sing villain call the Music Meister is a way to do it. Batman: The Brave And The Bold did an episode with the Bat-Villain that wanted to control the world with song and got everyone else singing, too.
Though one of the more controversial episodes of the show, Daria's season three opener, called Daria!, is also one of the most memorable. The episode focuses on the town, Lawndale, preparing for a hurricane and featured nine songs in 21 minutes.
Oz will never be know for it's lighthearted nature, but it did do a great musical episode. It mixed a prison variety show with a gritty prison drama. Who would have thought one of the first MA-rated shows would be remembered for a musical number?
That '70s Show- That '70s Musical
Whose else was going to hallucinate everyone singing other than Fez? For the 100th episode, the show did a musical extravaganza that featured songs from Peaches & Herbs, The Turtles, and The Carpenters.
7TH Heaven- Red Socks
One of the worst musical episodes in history, 7th Heaven's ninth season Valentines Day episode is memorable for all the wrong reasons. The show's cast didn't quite have the musical talents to pull it off. Along with it just not fitting with the rest of the show, Red Socks will go down in infamy.
Grey's Anatomy- Song Beneath the Song
Song Beneath The Song had the Grey's Anatomy cast singing songs that were featured throughout the series. This episode had a mixed reaction. The cast didn't lack the talent, but it just wasn't something that fit the show.
Honorable Mention: How I Met Your Mother- Girls VS Suits
Though not a musical episode, How I Met Your Mother's 100th episode featured one of the greatest musical numbers in television history.
